金波，1935年7月生于北京,祖籍河北冀县。
1957年考入北京师范学院中文系。
大学时代开始文学创作。
毕业后留校任教，先后在中文系、音乐系授课。
现为首都师范大学教授，中国作家协会儿童文学委员会委员，北京作家协会儿童文学创作委员会主任。
