这是由 H. G. Wells 的同名小说改编的。
这部小说是外星人侵略地球的滥觞，1938年万圣节在电台播放时竟有无数听众信以为真，产生了大恐慌。
不论小说还是电影都相当不错，但同一样，也犯了政治隐喻的毛病：片中外星人处处让人联想到苏联人。
不过如果连这个小瑕疵也会让你觉得不舒服的话，那几乎可以说这世上没有合适你看的影片了。
主演：吉恩·巴里，安妮·罗宾逊 火星人因火星气候突变无法生存而计划大举入侵地球，组织了大批坚不可摧的外星军团。
人类的所有武器都不能对付火星人的死光炮，城市逐个沦陷，全世界的人都在逃命，整个地球乱作一团。
正在这时，火星人却一个接一个的地死去……电影完整的保留了威尔斯小说的精神——要知道那本小说可是被无数电影奉为宝典膜拜的，它将Wells的精神完好地继承了下来，不仅拍出面对外星人进攻时人类的恐慌，更诠释了我们内心世界的无助和绝望。
这影片后来逐渐取代了小说在人们心中的地位，几乎演变成一种科幻的模式，产生的子子孙孙小说电影动漫画不计其数。

制片：The Chiodo Brothers 实际上是一部具有强烈超现实主义风格的影片，几乎没有什么娱乐性，核心题材也不那么拿人眼球，所以有点不太容易令你坐下来，安安稳稳地把电影看完。
