但因为播出技术的原因，中国的电视节目不支持隐藏字幕，所以播出机构也无法去掉节目中的字幕，可能会出现节目播出混乱、字幕之间互相遮掩的情况。
而台湾的华语节目也都会附上繁体中文字幕，和中国大陆一样因为播出技术的原因，目前仍无法去掉节目中的字幕。
和世界其他国家不同，台湾人在观看华语电影或电视剧、华语配音的动画等，皆有搭配中文字幕观看的习惯（他国的人在观看自己母语或第一语言的视频时，大部分都仅听对白，不需要再搭配对应台词的字幕，如日本）。
此外，字幕也是“空耳”的一种重要呈现方式，可将一种语言的影片或音乐作品用另一种语言中的谐音进行再诠释，通常目的为恶搞。
