毛姆曾学过医，所以《面纱》中的主角为医生不足为奇；毛姆1920年来过中国还写过一卷《中国见闻录》，所以小说的背景放在中国也不足为奇。
儿时因口吃身矮受欺凌而造就的心理创伤和阴沉分裂的人格，以及其曾学医从医的经历，让他，按某些批评者的话说，“学会用解剖刀一样冷峻、犀利的目光来剖视人生和社会”，但却充满了“局限性”，“毛姆解析了没有情感的情感，他毫不同情地操纵着一个在他眼中没有怜悯的世界”。
于是尽管是公认的批判现实主义小说家、通俗流行作家、剧作家……，但有人也甚至把他称做一个“传记”作家，因为他的多部代表作都取材自了真实的人或事，比如其处女作《兰贝斯的丽莎》，就是根据他从医实习期间的所见所闻写成；比如《人生的枷锁》，一部分以画家劳特累克为原型，另一部分则是自传；再比如《刀锋》，原型是哲学家维特根斯坦；再再比如《月亮和六便士》，则是以著名画家高更为原型创作的传记式小说。
《面纱》似乎也不例外。
折射着自己，也影射着他人。
据说在《面纱》出版不久，香港的助理布政司雷恩还曾起诉毛姆，称其在小说里中伤他本人，毛姆为此不得不将重改小说，把故事发生地弄在“清廷”，把“雷恩”改成“费恩”。
但无论《面纱》的故事发生在哪里，却真的重要
如果背景只是个铺设，故事发生在“清廷”，发生在印度，发生在日本，……都没关系。
只要是一个具有东方情调和神秘的地方，适合远行，适合探险，适合心灵。
连演员兼制片人爱德华·诺顿在中国的新闻发布会上都说过，“小说的视角有些窄，只是关于两个英国人的故事，跟中国并没有实质关系。
”所以他也不在乎编剧把原著中的故事发生地由香港改至上海，反正现在上海可比香港小资多了，只要故事中的两个英国男女能游历到一个叫“Mei-tan-fu”（梅潭府
湄潭府
Who knows
）的偏远山村里充当白求恩就好。
其实我还是蛮惊讶地听说爱德华·诺顿算一个小小的中国通。
他说拍《面纱》是试图以中国视角让观众真正感受中国。
他在耶鲁大学读书时就了解过中国历史，还曾随父在云南生活了六年。
作为制片人，诺顿为了这个心爱的本子，同样做了长达六年的筹备工作，除了找钱外，还想要拓展原著的视野。
比如，他的确在影片中加入了更多历史的背景和政治局势，比如1925年5月30日发生在上海英军杀害中国示威者，并引发中国公民游行、排外等事件（在片中甚至波及到了“Mei-tan-fu”），此外，片中的他还去拜访过地方军阀请求援手。
这些，在原著里都是找不到的。
还有像对那个托比·琼斯扮演的小军官和吕燕扮演的没落满族末裔在大烟中的爱情的描述，像在上海戏院的看戏场景表现，以及加入的诺顿发明出用水车和竹子做成传输管道给当地居民送去未被霍乱污染的事迹等等，都可以看出诺顿和导演约翰·卡兰在试图通过这样的手法，使得电影更有中国味，更关乎于中国，可是，结果并不如人意，总觉得流于表面。
诺顿以他的视角来看中国，并期待中国人能产生一样的共鸣，未必太过想当然也，事实上，任何老外所拍摄的电影中的中国，无论他们看来是如何的真实可信，无论其中有多少华人演员和群众，但在我们眼里，总还是呈显着异国情调。
在这上面，中国之于《面纱》还不如双子塔之于《世贸中心》来得重要。
诺顿另外还曾说，耶鲁大学历史教授乔纳森·思潘斯的一本《改变中国：在中国的西方顾问》帮他找到了思路。
书中描写了外国传教士、士兵、医生、教师、工程师和革命者在300多年中希望“改变中国”，却遭遇挑战。
“是这本书帮我使沃尔特这个人物变得清晰，”新华社转引诺顿的原话道，“他成为在中国的那些人中的一个，会对自己说‘我不会参与到政治或是社会改革中的，我来就是搞科学改善人们生活的。
’”有趣的是，同样和毛姆一样弃医从文的鲁迅可能则并不会认同片中主角沃尔特·费恩这种来此大公奉献的想法，——在他看来，改造中国人的精神可比用医学救人重要。
这次《面纱》改编而成的电影应该是拍得最成功的一次（此次是第三度搬上银幕）。
1934年就曾拍过，有当时的红人葛丽泰·嘉宝出演，但那个版本略逊一畴。
当今版本的胜出不仅由于《费城故事》编剧罗恩·内斯万尼尔的奉献，还得益于爱德华·诺顿和女主角娜奥米·沃茨的倾情表演。
诺顿扮演的那个十分内敛、冷静、认真、理智的医学博士，或似异类，不需太过张扬声色就已见其威力、魄力及魅力，连对老婆“红杏出墙”的报复方式都别具一格。
他最为中国人熟悉的莫过于《搏击俱乐部》，之后是《一级恐惧》《美国历史X》《性书大亨》等，今年他在《流入山谷》和《幻术师》里的表现也相当耀眼，《面纱》一出，更让他有了争夺的奥斯卡的资格。
娜奥米·沃茨以前在《21克》《穆赫兰大道》里就有杰出表现，前年年末因成为《金刚》手中颇具气质、胆色又楚楚招怜的金发女郎而一时名声大噪。
在《面纱》里，她的扮相粗糙，也并不总是那般可人，头发也弄成了黑色，但却把凯蒂这个角色处理得十分饱满，特别是心路历程的转变方面。
毛姆并没有下笔刻画的地方，包括沃尔特·费恩的工作细节，电影却下了浓笔；而最浪漫的时刻，自然是死亡威胁中的青山碧水，一叶翩舟。
但是电影对故事和人物的营造，终究还是通俗化了，善良化了，美好化了。
在原著小说中，女主角一生也没有爱过男主角，即便她为其感动，为其有所改变，但在回到香港后，依然走回了情人的世界，虽最终觉悟“女人的一生不能只是为了和男人睡觉并依附于他”，还希望学会怜悯和慈悲，——但电影里的她终于明白了男主角的爱，终于对男主角心有爱意和感激，甚至在回到英国后拒绝情人的诱惑选择独自抚养孩子坚强生活；男主角则是一个按某书评人所说的“恶毒的老实人”，书中的他也许并没有电影里的那个人“伟大”，尤其有个具有代表性情节讲，凯蒂告诉沃尔特她怀孕却不知道谁是孩子父亲时，书中的他是诡异的冷笑，而电影里的他却说“现在这还重要吗
”，潜台词是“我已原谅你，只要我们依然相爱”。
此外，影片对凯蒂的父亲（在书中这么重要的角色）的描述却处理得非常简单，让故事失却了一个本值得品味的人物。
倒是黄秋生演的余团长的戏份加多了（遗憾的是书快结尾处的“哭戏”没了），一如既往是那付冷眼旁观的屌样，符合他的一贯风格，好吧，我承认这也是一种霸道的演技。
片中他给人做“翻译”那几段，很幽默。
夏雨也有出现，但跟群众演员无异，还不如那个胖乎乎的冯砾让人印象深刻。
《面纱》其实是关于爱的放逐。
一个置于死地而复生的爱情传奇。
一部可以慢慢咀嚼的影片。
在沃尔特和凯蒂光鲜的外貌下，却隐藏着不为人知的挣扎和挫折，在旁人在为他们赶来山村救死扶伤的义举而感动时，凯蒂肚中的孩子却不知道父亲是谁。
多么的讽刺
在这里，哀莫大于心死；幸莫过于真爱。
