--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow . The day is cold, and dark, and dreary; It rains, and the wind is never weary; The vine still clings to the moldering wall, But at every gust the dead leaves fall, And the day is dark and dreary. My life is cold and dark and dreary; It rains and the wind is never weary; My though still cling to the moldering past, But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast, And the days are dark and dreary. Be still, sad heart! And cease repining; Behind the clouds is the sun still shining; Thy fate is the common fate of all, Into each life some rain must fall, Some days must be dark and dreary.

However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are.It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.Love your life, poor as it is.You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hourss, even in a poor-house.The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode;the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts,as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town;but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means.which should be more disreputable.Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends,Turn the old, return to them.Things do not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

Love's Witness Slight unpremeditated Words are borne By every common Wind into the Air; Carelessly utter'd, die as soon as born, And in one instant give both Hope and Fear: Breathing all Contraries with the same Wind According to the Caprice of the Mind. But Billetdoux are constant Witnesses, Substantial Records to Eternity; Just Evidences, who the Truth confess, On which the Lover safely may rely; They're serious Thoughts, digested and resolv'd; And last, when Words are into Clouds devolv'd.

We Never Told Him He Couldn't Do It My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally - but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn't know he had a problem when you saw him walk . The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn't be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn't know. In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others - perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know. He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day - even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. I asked him how he felt. Okay, he said. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn't run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn't know. Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade - the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn't do it. We never told him he couldn't do it...so he didn't know. He just did it.

泰戈尔英文诗 《世界上最远的距离》 The most distant way in the world The most distant way in the world is not the way from birth to the end. it is when i sit near you that you don't understand i love u. The most distant way in the world is not that you're not sure i love u. It is when my love is bewildering the soul but i can't speak it out. The most distant way in the world is not that i can't say i love u. it is after looking into my heart i can't change my love. The most distant way in the world is not that i'm loving u. it is in our love we are keeping between the distance. We Were Dear to Each Other By Rabindranath Tagore Stray birds of summer come to my window to sing and fly away. And yellow leaves of autumn, which have no songs, flutter and fall there with a sign. O Troupe of little vagrants of the world, leave your footprints in my words. The world puts off its mask of vastness to its lover. It becomes small as one song,as one kiss of the eternal. It is the tears of the earth that keep her smiles in bloom. The mighty desert is burning for the love of a blade of grass who shakes her head and laughs and flies away. If you shed tears when you miss the sun,you also miss the stars. The sands in your way beg for your song and your movement, dancing water,Will you carry the burden of their lameless? Her wishful face haunts my dreams like the rain at night. Once we dreamt that we were strangers. We wake up to find that we were dear to each other. I 1 O wild West Wind, thou breath of Autumn's being, 2 Thou, from whose unseen presence the leaves dead 3 Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing, 4 Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red, 5 Pestilence-stricken multitudes: O thou, 6 Who chariotest to their dark wintry bed 7 The winged seeds, where they lie cold and low, 8 Each like a corpse within its grave, until 9 Thine azure sister of the Spring shall blow 10 Her clarion o'er the dreaming earth, and fill 11 (Driving sweet buds like flocks to feed in air) 12 With living hues and odours plain and hill: 13 Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere; 14 Destroyer and preserver; hear, oh hear! II 15 Thou on whose stream, mid the steep sky's commotion, 16 Loose clouds like earth's decaying leaves are shed, 17 Shook from the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean, 18 Angels of rain and lightning: there are spread 19 On the blue surface of thine a{:e}ry surge, 20 Like the bright hair uplifted from the head 21 Of some fierce Maenad, even from the dim verge 22 Of the horizon to the zenith's height, 23 The locks of the approaching storm. Thou dirge 24 Of the dying year, to which this closing night 25 Will be the dome of a vast sepulchre, 26 Vaulted with all thy congregated might 27 Of vapours, from whose solid atmosphere 28 Black rain, and fire, and hail will burst: oh hear! III 29 Thou who didst waken from his summer dreams 30 The blue Mediterranean, where he lay, 31 Lull'd by the coil of his cryst{`a}lline streams, 32 Beside a pumice isle in Baiae's bay, 33 And saw in sleep old palaces and towers 34 Quivering within the wave's intenser day, 35 All overgrown with azure moss and flowers 36 So sweet, the sense faints picturing them! Thou 37 For whose path the Atlantic's level powers 38 Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below 39 The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear 40 The sapless foliage of the ocean, know 41 Thy voice, and suddenly grow gray with fear, 42 And tremble and despoil themselves: oh hear! IV 43 If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear; 44 If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee; 45 A wave to pant beneath thy power, and share 46 The impulse of thy strength, only less free 47 Than thou, O uncontrollable! If even 48 I were as in my boyhood, and could be 49 The comrade of thy wanderings over Heaven, 50 As then, when to outstrip thy skiey speed 51 Scarce seem'd a vision; I would ne'er have striven 52 As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need. 53 Oh, lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud! 54 I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed! 55 A heavy weight of hours has chain'd and bow'd 56 One too like thee: tameless, and swift, and proud. V 57 Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is: 58 What if my leaves are falling like its own! 59 The tumult of thy mighty harmonies 60 Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone, 61 Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce, 62 My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one! 63 Drive my dead thoughts over the universe 64 Like wither'd leaves to quicken a new birth! 65 And, by the incantation of this verse, 66 Scatter, as from an unextinguish'd hearth 67 Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind! 68 Be through my lips to unawaken'd earth 69 The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind, 70 If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

Today the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive. Concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. Governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution. Still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存) our natural resources and recycle(再循环) our products. We are sure that we can have a better and cleaner place in the future. From:Me

“…I was rich, if not in money, in sunny hours and summer days.”----- Henry David Thoreau.“……

When Thoreau wrote that line, he was thinking of the Walden. Pond he knew as a boy.

Woodchoppers and the Iron Horse had not yet greatly damaged the beauty of its setting. A boy could go to the pond and lie on his back against the seat of a boat, lazily drifting from shore to shore while the loons dived and the swallows dipped around him. Thoreau loved to recall such sunny hours and summer days “when idleness was the most attractive and productive business.”

”I too was a boy in love with a pond, rich in sunny hours and summer days. Sun and summer are still what they always were, but the boy and the pond changed. The boy, who is now a man, no longer find much time for idle drifting. The pond has been annexed by a great city. The swamps where herons once hunted are now drained and filled with houses. The bay where water lilies quietly floated is now a harbor for motor boats. In short, everything that the boy loved no longer exists----except in the man's memory of it.

Some people insist that only today and tomorrow matter. But how much poorer we would be if we really lived by that rule! So much of what we do today is frivolous and futile and soon forgotten. So much of what we hope to do tomorrow never happens.

The past is the bank in which we store our most valuable possession: the memories that give meaning and depth to our lives.

Those who truly treasure the past will not bemoan the passing of the good old days, because days enshrined in memory are never lost. Death itself is powerless to still a remembered voice or erase a remembered smile. And for one boy who is now a man, there is a pond which neither time nor tide can change, where he can still spend a quite hour in the sun.

A Red Red Rose O My luve’s* like a red, red rose, That’s newly sprung in June; O my luve’s like the melodie, That’s sweetly play’d in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry. Till a’ the seas gang* dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run.And fare thee weel, my only luve, And fare thee weel a while! And I will come again, my luve, Tho’ it were ten thousand mile!

1 Run through the rain1 雨中的记忆She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the Earth, it has no time to flow down the spout.

We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We all waited, some patiently, others irritated, because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I get lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child come pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in, “Mom, let's run through the rain. she said.

What? Mom asked.“什么

Let's run through the rain!

No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit.

This young child waited about another minute and repeated: Mom, let's run through the rain.

”We'll get soaked if we do.

No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning, the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm.“不会的,妈妈。

This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?“今天早上

”Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!“

’”The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.

Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. Time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith. Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just needed washing. Mom said. Then off they ran.

We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories. So, don't forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories every day!

To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. I hope you still take the time to run through the rain.

2 Love is just a thread2 爱如丝线Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he’s very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.

“Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while.

”“What?” she replied, still doing her work.“什么问题?”

“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.我低声地问道:”你和爸爸之间有没有爱情啊?”My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.

I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:

不过,后来我听见母亲说:“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread.Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there.

I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale. It seemed both of them had had a serious illness.

After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed they were the most harmonious couple. Along the country road, there were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees. The sun gently glistened through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.

The doctor had said my father would recover in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk by himself. All of us were worried about him.

“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.有一天,我问他:“爸爸,你感觉怎么样?”“Susan, don’t worry about me.” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom. I like this kind of life.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.

Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm..
