这首歌诞生于1945年，本来是一出音乐剧的插曲，奥斯卡·哈姆斯特恩作词，理查德·罗杰斯作曲。
“猫王”翻唱这首歌，是因为他听过前辈歌王弗兰克·辛纳屈的演唱版本，不过在“猫王”翻唱时，它还没有成为利物浦的队歌。
1963年8月，一个已经在英国乐坛小有名气的利物浦人杰里·马斯登听到了这首歌，他和乐队鼓手开始改变这首歌，觉得原歌虽然节奏舒缓，“却特别能够打动人心”，于是开始试唱此歌，没想到效果极好。

最让人吃惊的是，当上世纪九十年代初前南斯拉夫解体的时候，萨格勒布迪纳莫俱乐部更名为克罗地亚萨格勒布的时候，愤怒的球迷拿起武器抗争，而当地政府甚至禁止出售《你永远不会独行》的任何形式的拷贝，因为当地球迷已经用这首歌曲的曲调，伴着他们改编过的《我热爱迪纳莫》的歌词，作球迷心中战斗的歌曲。
