在着力打造历史湘湖、文化湘湖的同时，在建的湘湖会考虑打好生态牌，使其“野”味更足。
此外，他们还将致力于夜湘湖的建设，使湘湖更具魅力。
和西湖十景一样，古湘湖也有八景。
比较有名气的如越王怀古，家喻户晓的越王勾践“卧薪尝胆”的故事就诞生于此。
湘湖景区内还有8000多年历史的独木舟，这是独一无二的世界资源。

如美国学者萧邦齐所写的《湘湖——九个世纪的中国世事》，洋洋洒洒20余万字。
