孟郊早年生活贫困，曾周游湖北、湖南、广西等地，无所遇合，屡试不第。
贞元中张建封镇守徐州时，郊曾往谒。
46岁（一说45岁），始登进士第，有诗《登科后》：“昔日龌龊不足夸，今朝放荡思无涯；春风得意马蹄疾，一日看尽长安花。
”。
然后东归，旅游汴州(今河南开封)、越州（今浙江绍兴）。
贞元十七年（801年），任为溧阳尉。
在任不事曹务，常以作诗为乐，被罚半俸。
元和初，河南尹郑余庆奏为河南水陆转运从事，试协律郎，定居洛阳。
60岁时，因母死去官。
郑余庆镇守兴元，又奏为参谋、试大理评事。
郊应邀前往，到阌乡（今河南灵宝），暴病去世，孟郊的朋友韩愈等人凑了100贯为他营葬，郑余庆派人送300贯，“为遗孀永久之赖”。
张籍私谥为贞曜先生。
唐人认为孟诗是“元和体”的一种，“元和已后”，“学矫激于孟郊”（李肇《唐国史补》）。
唐末张为作《诗人主客图》，以他为“清奇僻苦主”。
宋诗人梅尧臣、谢翱，清诗人胡天游、江湜、许承尧，写作上都受到他的影响。
对孟诗的评价，持褒义论的，韩愈、李观以后，有贯休、黄庭坚、费衮、潘德舆、刘熙载、陈衍、钱振锽、夏敬观等；持贬义论的，有苏轼、魏泰、严羽、元好问、王闿运等。
他和贾岛都以苦吟著称，又多苦语。
苏轼称之“郊寒岛瘦”（《祭柳子玉文》），后来论者便以孟郊、贾岛并称为苦吟诗人代表，元好问甚至嘲笑他是“诗囚”（《论诗三十首》）。
今传本《孟东野诗集》10卷，出自北宋宋敏求所编刊，黄丕烈所藏北宋蜀本，已不可见。
陆心源所藏汲古阁影宋精本，今归日本。
通行本有汲古阁本，闵刻朱墨本。

1959年人民文学出版社刊印华忱之校订《孟东野诗集》，末附孟郊年谱、遗事辑录。

其中有的诗反映现实，揭露藩镇罪恶，如《征妇怨》、《感怀》、《杀气不在边》、《伤春》等；有的关心人民疾苦，愤慨贫富不均，如《织妇辞》、《寒地百姓吟》等；有的表现骨肉深情，如《游子吟》、《结爱》、《杏殇》等；有的刻画山水风景，如《汝州南潭陪陆中丞公宴》、《与王二十一员外涯游枋口柳溪》、《石淙》、《寒溪》、《送超上人归天台》、《峡哀》、《游终南山》等；有的写仕途失意，抨击浇薄世风，如《落第》、《溧阳秋霁》、《伤时》、《择友》等，还有的自诉穷愁，叹老嗟病，如《秋怀》、《叹命》、《老恨》等；而“出门即有碍，谁谓天地宽”(《赠崔纯亮》)一类诗，虽反映了世途艰险，但也表现了作者偏激的心情。
孟诗艺术风格，或长于白描，不用词藻典故，语言明白淡素而又力避平庸浅易；或精思苦炼，雕刻奇险。
这两种风格的诗，都有许多思深意远、造语新奇的佳作。
但也有些诗过于艰涩枯槁，缺乏自然之趣。
他和贾岛齐名，皆以苦吟著称，唐人张为称他的诗“清奇僻苦主”，而苏轼则称“郊寒岛瘦”。
后来论者把孟、贾二人并称为苦吟诗人的代表。
今传本《孟东野诗集》10卷。

诗中亲切真淳地吟颂了伟大的人性美——母爱。
诗的开头两句，所写的人是母与子，所写的物是线与衣，然而却点出了母子相依为命的骨肉之情。
中间两句集中写慈母的动作和意态，表现了母亲对儿子的深笃之情。
虽无言语，也无泪水，却充溢着爱的纯情，扣人心弦，催人泪下。
最后两句是前四句的升华，以通俗形象的比喻，寄托赤子炽烈的情怀，对于春日般的母爱，小草似的儿女，怎能报答于万一呢
全诗无华丽的词藻，亦无巧琢雕饰，于清新流畅，淳朴素淡的语言中，饱含着浓郁醇美的诗味，情真意切，千百年来拨动多少读者的心弦，引起万千游子的共鸣。
孟郊一生贫困潦倒，直到五十岁时才得到了一个溧阳县尉的卑微之职。
诗人自然不把这样的小官放在心上，仍然放情於山水吟咏，公务则有所废弛，县令就只给他半俸。
本篇题下作者自注：“迎母溧上作”，当是他居官溧阳时的作品。
诗中亲切而真淳地吟颂了一种普通而伟大的人性美——母爱，因而引起了无数读者的共鸣，千百年来一直脍炙人口。
计划反对深挚的母爱，无时无刻不在沐浴着儿女们。
然而对于孟郊这位常年颠沛流离、居无定所的游子来说，最值得回忆的，莫过于母子分离的痛苦时刻了。
此诗描写的就是这种时候，慈母缝衣的普通场景，而表现的，却是诗人深沉的内心情感。
开头两句“慈母手中线，游子身上衣”，实际上是两个词组，而不是两个句子，这样写就从人到物，突出了两件最普通的东西，写出了母子相依为命的骨肉之情。
紧接两句写出人的动作和意态，把笔墨集中在慈母上。
行前的此时此刻，老母一针一线，针针线线都是这样的细密，是怕儿子迟迟难归，故而要把衣衫缝制得更为结实一点儿罢。
其实，老人的内心何尝不是切盼儿子早些平安归来呢
慈母的一片深笃之情，正是在日常生活中最细微的地方流露出来。
朴素自然，亲切感人。
这里既没有言语，也没有眼泪，然而一片爱的纯情从这普通常见的场景中充溢而出，拨动了每一个读者的心弦，催人泪下，唤起普天下儿女们亲切的联想和深挚的忆念。
最后两句，以当事者的直觉，翻出进一层的深意：“谁言寸草心，报得三春晖。
”“谁言”有些刊本作“谁知”和“谁将”，其实按诗意还是作“谁言”好。
诗人出以反问，意味尤为深长。
这两句是前四句的升华，通俗形象的比兴，加以悬绝的对比，寄托了赤子炽烈的情意：对于春天阳光般厚博的母爱，区区小草似的儿女怎能报答得了呢。
真有“欲报之德，昊天罔极”之意，感情是那样淳厚真挚。
这是一首母爱的颂歌，在宦途失意的境况下，诗人饱尝世态炎凉，穷愁终身，故愈觉亲情之可贵。
“诗从肺腑出，出辄愁肺腑”（苏轼《读孟郊诗》）。
这首诗，虽无藻绘与雕饰，然而清新流畅，淳朴素淡中正见其诗味的浓郁醇美。
全诗最后用一双关句，写出儿子对母亲的深情。
此诗写在溧阳，到了清康熙年间，有两位溧阳人又吟出这样的诗句：“父书空满筐，母线尚萦襦”（史骐生《写怀》）；“向来多少泪，都染手缝衣”（彭桂《建初弟来都省亲喜极有感》）。
可见《游子吟》留给人们的深刻印象，是历久而不衰的。

乐府原来是古代掌管音乐的官署，掌管宴会、游行时所用的音乐，也负责民间诗歌合乐曲的采集。
作为诗体名的“乐府”最早即指后者，后来也用以称魏晋到唐代可以配乐的诗歌和后人效仿的乐府古题的作品。
