公元前1世纪，古罗马就已有默剧，到了18世纪，默剧成了英国最风行的戏剧形式。
但由于过于追求视觉效果，花费过高，默剧最终被现实主义戏剧取代。
默剧的演员不可以说话，通过肢体动作进行表达，但可以发出笑声、哭声，一些情节还可以通过旁白来完成。
默剧主要是表达严肃的题材，场景单调但充满象征意义。
演员的表演强调默契，动作、表情比较夸张，情节一般不复杂，给观众留有想象空间。
一般人都称呼以肢体动作取代语言的戏剧形式为哑剧，认为哑剧就是默剧。
其实，这是一种以片盖全的错误观点，如果依照表演形式的外观而论，两者的确都舍弃了戏剧的语言性，以肢体的动作为表达方式。
但是就两者的实质意义而言，其内涵就大异其趣了。
哑剧的哑是指喑哑、无言语，其前提是否定了语言功能，在舞台上纯粹以手势、肢体动作、面部表情来演绎戏剧；而默剧的默是指沉默与默契，并没有否定语言功能，而是透过舞台的形式来表现戏剧中非语言性的意境。
哑剧是以外表形式为出发点，默剧则是以精神面貌为其根本，两者之于戏剧的意义泾渭分明，因此绝不可混为一谈。
