足球的竞技发挥水平，会受到海拔高度的影响。
很多球迷应该都注意到2007年12月的一条新闻，国际足联通过了“限高令”，禁止在海拔2750米以上的地方举行国际足球比赛。
本来国际足联想限制得更严格，超过2500米就不许设主场，但是南美的哥伦比亚、厄瓜多尔、玻利维亚等几个拥有高原主场的国家，对此强烈反对，因此，妥协的结果是，限高标准又往上提了点。
不过，这场风波可能还没有结束，玻利维亚的首都拉巴斯海拔为3600米—几乎快赶上拉萨了，他们可不想这么轻易地放弃自己的高原优势。
高原对玻利维亚足球起了多大的作用，看看美洲杯的数据就知道了，这支球队2次进入美洲杯决赛，全都是借着东道主的优势。
他们队员的心肺功能早已经适应了这种环境，但是，其他球队来到高原上，即便是实力强劲的巴西队，都是很难发挥水平的，他们能克服高原反应，跑满90分钟就谢天谢地了。
在看到玻利维亚于1994年，厄瓜多尔于2002、2006年因高原主场优势获得世界杯出线权后，足球方面没落了若干年的秘鲁也动心了，想把主场搬到海拔3400的库斯科，虽然其绝大多数人口都生活在沿海和低海拔谷地。
可惜，如今，这限令一出，秘鲁人的计划只能胎死腹中了。
我们国家队最近也动起了高原主场的念头，2010年南非世界杯预选赛，中国的第一场主场迎战澳大利亚，确定安排在海拔1800米的昆明。
据说，国足总教练当年率加纳队闯进德国世界杯，就曾在预选赛上因带队前往纳米比亚训练提前适应高原条件从而攻破了南非队设下的高原主场“陷阱”，如今又想以高原“陷阱”难倒澳大利亚。
