In recent years, Korea has transformed itself into a heavyweight player in the world of TV and movie entertainment. Much of Asia has fallen in love with Korean dramas, known for being non-violent, with the most attractive appeal of romance and free from sexual aggression. The “Korean Wave” hit the Great China Area (including Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, Southeast Asia, India and even Turkey. Turn on any television in these Asian countries, you are sure to see a Korean drama series or two on primetime. The hit TV dramas and their soundtracks are also becoming popular among young North Koreans. As the “Korean Wave” sweeps through these Asian countries, local fans watch films attentively, love and even shed tears for the characters. Business people were quick to capitalize on the craze. Everything from small to big is marketed as Korean, such as shoes, hats and clothes. On the streets of big cities, it is easy to spot girls wearing the clothes, makeup and hairstyles popularized by Korean actresses. In early 1990s, few girls in some Asian countries had handbags. But now, handbags are everywhere, just because girls see Korean actresses frequently carry them. In many Asian countries, there is a “Korean beauty fever”. Many girls and even married women want to be beautiful like Korean actresses. The tourist boom is part of the “Korean Wave” that began in China, spread to Southeast Asia and made a strong impact on Japan. Initiated by exports of TV dramas, the “Korean Wave” has now become a major booster of Korean industry, and its economic impact amounts to as much as 1 trillion won (US$936 million). The boom has gone from dramas themselves to food, fashion, computer games... all things that appear in Korean dramas. Although the genre has peaked in Asia, these dramas and their stars are still capable of sending temperatures and ratings sky high, not to mention boosting tourist arrivals to Korea.
