What would you do if you failed? Many people may choose to give up. However, the surest way to success is to keep your direction and stick to your goal.On your way to success, you must keep your direction. It is just like a lamp, guiding you in darkness and helping you overcome obstacles on your way. Otherwise, you will easily get lost or hesitate to go ahead.Direction means objectives. You can get nowhere without an objective in life. You can try to write your objective on paper and make some plans to achieve it. In this way, you will know how to arrange your time and to spend your time properly. And you should also have a belief that you are sure to succeed as long as you keep your direction all the time.

Dear leaders, teachers, dear students: Hello everyone, today my topic is faith, beyond the self. Helen Keller had such a vivid image of the words: when a person felt the urge to fly, he would never be content to crawl on the floor. is the ideal, it is a kind of belief, she accepted the challenge of life, created the miracle of life. She is deaf, weak woman in one actually graduated from the Harvard University, and all of life force running calls, built up a charity for the benefit of persons with disabilities, was selected for the twentieth Century ten American Idol. Ideal and faith like burning fire so that she was out of the darkness, out of the dead, ideals and beliefs as the great wings, help her flew up into the sky. In a sense, people are not living in the material world, and Live in the spirit world, live in the ideal and faith. For human life, to survive, as long as a bowl of rice, a cup of water on it; but to be wonderful, she has spirit, we should have lofty ideals and firm beliefs, ideals and beliefs so that poor people become a millionaire, so dark, people see the light, make people see a glimmer of hope, make the dream a reality. Let me tell you a story: the vast desert, an expedition in the difficult trek. The head of the scorching sun baked, the explorers sweat like rain. The mouth parched and tongue scorched. Unfortunately, they have no water. Water is the survival of their faith, faith, like a flat frame, a lost soul, invariably look to the captain. It can do the captain took a kettle from the waist, hands up, firmly shook, shouted in surprise: Oh, I have a pot of water! But before crossing the desert, no drink. The heavy kettle from the players hands in order to pass, the original kind of desperate face has also revealed a strong expression, we must get out of the desert belief support they staggered forward step by step. Move. Looked at the bottle, they pursed his chapped lips, suddenly add strength. Finally, they escaped out of the vast expanse of the desert, we cried when a long time staring at that to support their belief in the kettle. Captain carefully unscrew the bottle cap, slowly out of the sand is a continuously his sincere. Said: as long as the heart has the firm faith, dry sand can sometimes become cool springs. Black leader Martin Ruud Kim famously said: in this world, no one can make you down. If your own beliefs Still standing. Yes, even in the most difficult time, also don't put out the faith the hearts of the torch. The students, no matter what your current results, no matter how you now, as long as the firm faith, beyond the self, you will have a direction, you will have a goal you have, the power of life, you will have a hope of success.

Ladies and Gentlemen , Good afternoon! I’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. I hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it. First I want to ask you some questions: 1、 Do you know what is youth? 2、 How do you master your youth? Youth Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often existsin a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul .Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust . Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young . When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80. Thank you!

Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. ~Henry David Thoreau
——亨利·大卫·梭罗(美国作家及自然主义者)Everything about my future was ambiguously assumed. I would get into debt by going to college, then I would be forced to get a job to pay off that debt, while still getting into more and more debt by buying a house and a car. It seemed like a never-ending cycle that had no place for the possibility of a dream.
I want more—but not necessarily in the material sense of personal wealth and success. I want more out of life. I want a passion, a conceptual dream that wouldn't let me sleep out of pure excitement. I want to spring out of bed in the morning, rain or shine, and have that zest for life that seemed so intrinsic in early childhood.
We all have a dream. It might be explicitly defined or just a vague idea, but most of us are so stuck in the muck of insecurity and self-doubt that we just dismiss it as unrealistic or too difficult to pursue.
We become so comfortable with the life that has been planned out for us by our parents, teachers, traditions, and societal norms that we feel that it's stupid and unsafe to risk losing it for the small hope of achieving something that is more fulfilling.
The policy of being too cautious is the greatest risk of all. ~Jawaharlal Nehru过于谨慎才是最大的危险——贾瓦哈拉尔·尼赫鲁(印度开国总理)Taking a risk is still a risk. We can, and will, fail. Possibly many, many, many times. But that is what makes it exciting for me. That uncertainty can be viewed negatively, or it can empower us.
Failing is what makes us grow, it makes us stronger and more resilient to the aspects of life we have no control over. The fear of failure, although, is what makes us stagnant and sad. So even though I couldn't see the future as clearly as before, I took the plunge in hopes that in the depths of fear and failure, I would come out feeling more alive than ever before.
If you feel lost, just take a deep breath and realize that being lost can be turning point of finding out who you truly are, and what you truly want to do.
Madam President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, faculty, family, friends, and, most importantly, today's graduates, Thank you for letting me share this wonderful day with you.
I am not sure I can live up to the high standards of Harvard Commencement speakers. Last year, J.K. Rowling, the billionaire novelist, who started as a classics student, graced this podium. The year before, Bill Gates, the mega-billionaire philanthropist and computer nerd stood here. Today, sadly, you have me. I am not a billionaire, but at least I am a nerd.
I am grateful to receive an honorary degree from Harvard, an honor that means more to me than you might care to imagine. You see, I was the academic black sheep of my family. My older brother has an M.D.\\\/Ph.D. from MIT and Harvard while my younger brother has a law degree from Harvard. When I was awarded a Nobel Prize, I thought my mother would be pleased. Not so. When I called her on the morning of the announcement, she replied, That's nice, but when are you going to visit me next. Now, as the last brother with a degree from Harvard, maybe, at last, she will be satisfied.
Another difficulty with giving a Harvard commencement address is that some of you may disapprove of the fact that I have borrowed material from previous speeches. I ask that you forgive me for two reasons.
First, in order to have impact, it is important to deliver the same message more than once. In science, it is important to be the first person to make a discovery, but it is even more important to be the last person to make that discovery.
Second, authors who borrow from others are following in the footsteps of the best. Ralph Waldo Emerson, who graduated from Harvard at the age of 18, noted All my best thoughts were stolen by the ancients. Picasso declared Good artists borrow. Great artists steal. Why should commencement speakers be held to a higher standard?
I also want to point out the irony of speaking to graduates of an institution that would have rejected me, had I the chutzpah to apply. I am married to Dean Jean, the former dean of admissions at Stanford. She assures me that she would have rejected me, if given the chance. When I showed her a draft of this speech, she objected strongly to my use of the word rejected. She never rejected applicants; her letters stated that we are unable to offer you admission. I have difficulty understanding the difference. After all, deans of admissions of highly selective schools are in reality, deans of rejection. Clearly, I have a lot to learn about marketing.
My address will follow the classical sonata form of commencement addresses. The first movement, just presented, were light-hearted remarks. This next movement consists of unsolicited advice, which is rarely valued, seldom remembered, never followed. As Oscar Wilde said, The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself. So, here comes the advice. First, every time you celebrate an achievement, be thankful to those who made it possible. Thank your parents and friends who supported you, thank your professors who were inspirational, and especially thank the other professors whose less-than-brilliant lectures forced you to teach yourself. Going forward, the ability to teach yourself is the hallmark of a great liberal arts education and will be the key to your success. To your fellow students who have added immeasurably to your education during those late night discussions, hug them. Also, of course, thank Harvard. Should you forget, there's an alumni association to remind you. Second, in your future life, cultivate a generous spirit. In all negotiations, don't bargain for the last, little advantage. Leave the change on the table. In your collaborations, always remember that credit is not a conserved quantity. In a successful collaboration, everybody gets 90 percent of the credit.
Jimmy Stewart, as Elwood P. Dowd in the movie Harvey got it exactly right. He said: Years ago my mother used to say to me, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be ... she always used to call me Elwood ... in this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart. ... I recommend pleasant. You may quote me on that.
My third piece of advice is as follows: As you begin this new stage of your lives, follow your passion. If you don't have a passion, don't be satisfied until you find one. Life is too short to go through it without caring deeply about something. When I was your age, I was incredibly single-minded in my goal to be a physicist. After college, I spent eight years as a graduate student and postdoc at Berkeley, and then nine years at Bell Labs. During that my time, my central focus and professional joy was physics.
Here is my final piece of advice. Pursuing a personal passion is important, but it should not be your only goal. When you are old and gray, and look back on your life, you will want to be proud of what you have done. The source of that pride won't be the things you have acquired or the recognition you have received. It will be the lives you have touched and the difference you have made.
After nine years at Bell labs, I decided to leave that warm, cozy ivory tower for what I considered to be the real world, a university. Bell Labs, to quote what was said about Mary Poppins, was practically perfect in every way, but I wanted to leave behind something more than scientific articles. I wanted to teach and give birth to my own set of scientific children.
Ted Geballe, a friend and distinguished colleague of mine at Stanford, who also went from Berkeley to Bell Labs to Stanford years earlier, described our motives best:
The best part of working at a university is the students. They come in fresh, enthusiastic, open to ideas, unscarred by the battles of life. They don't realize it, but they're the recipients of the best our society can offer. If a mind is ever free to be creative, that's the time. They come in believing textbooks are authoritative, but eventually they figure out that textbooks and professors don't know everything, and then they start to think on their own. Then, I begin learning from them.
My students, post doctoral fellows, and the young researchers who worked with me at Bell Labs, Stanford, and Berkeley have been extraordinary. Over 30 former group members are now professors, many at the best research institutions in the world, including Harvard. I have learned much from them. Even now, in rare moments on weekends, the remaining members of my biophysics group meet with me in the ether world of cyberspace.
I began teaching with the idea of giving back; I received more than I gave. This brings me to the final movement of this speech. It begins with a story about an extraordinary scientific discovery and a new dilemma that it poses. It's a call to arms and about making a difference.
B: Where did you come from? I'm from ... A: I'm from ..., it's a nice place, have you been there before? B: No, but I've heard so much about that place, everyone who has been there say it's a beautiful place with really nice people. A: Most of the people there are really nice. I remember I had a friend in Elementary School, she was just the kindest person ever. She would also be the first person to stand up and help anyone who's in need. Do you know anyone like that? B: Yes, but speaking of Elementary School friends, I know a person who is just the opposite as your friend, he was awful. He always picked on the girls; I remember he used to take our utensils and won't give it back. He also used to secretly listen to everything we say, and then spread it to everyone, including our secrets. A: That is awful, did he get in trouble from teachers or other students' parents? B: He did, but that didn't seem to stop him, he was after all, only an elementary kid. A: Of course. So, how long are you going to stay here? B: I'm going to be here all afternoon, how about you? A: Me too, want to go get something to drink? B: Sure...
Most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve this goal. What is the secret to popularity? In fact, it is very si-mp-le. The first step is to improve our appearance. We should always make sure that we stay in good shape and drewell. When we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look better but also feel better. In addition, we should smile and appear friendly. After all, our facial expression is an important part of our appearance. If we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and impressed by our confidence.Another important step is developing more consideration for others. We should always put others first and place their interests before our own. It's also important to be good listeners; in this way people will feel comfortable enough to confide in us. However, no matter what we do, we must not gossip. Above all, we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies. Only by being sincere and respectful of others can we earn their respect. If we can do all of the above, I am sure popularity will come our way.
Strive for balance in life 努力保持生活的平衡by Brain Dyson 布莱恩•戴森(可口可乐公司总裁)Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them----work, family, health, friends and spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop one it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls—family, health, friends, and spirit—are made of glass. If you drop one of those, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life. How?Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.Don’t set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as they were your life, for without them, life is meaningless.Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time you live ALL the days of your life.Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.Don’t be afraid to admit that you are lethan perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each together.Don’t be afraid to encourage risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly, and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is gift…… that’s why we call it the present.
