Environment - how can you help protect it? We all know Tagore. This famous Indian poet ['pəuit] once said, “Life is given to us, and we earn it by giving it.” As the saying goes, nature is given to us, and we earn it by contributing to it. However, most people nowadays just want to ask for more from the nature. In fact, they do very little contribution to the nature. Therefore, the environment around us is becoming worse and worse. Every day on Earth 12,000 barrels ['bærəl] of oil have leaked [li:k] into the sea; Earth every day there are 160 sq km （square kilometers ） of barren ['bærən] land known as the land; Earth every day there are 55,000 hectares ['hektɑ:] of forest ['fɔrist] fires ['faiə] due to deforestation [di:,fɔri'steiʃən] and destroyed; 8,000,000 tons [tʌn] per day quietly ['kwaiətli] in the water and soil loss ... ... At the end of why the information is ... ...? Behind because there are many, many human beings on our Mother Earth has done a bad thing. It all sounds so depressing - but we certainly mustn't despair! Every one of us, whatever age we are can do something to help slow down and reverse some of the damage. We cannot leave the problem-solving entirely to the experts - we all have a responsibility for our environment. We must learn to live in a sustainable [sə'steinəbl] way. Waste We humans create such a lot of rubbish! Is all our rubbish really rubbish? If you think about it, much of what we throw away could be used again. It makes sense to reuse [,ri:'ju:z] and recycle our rubbish instead of just trying to solve the problem of where to put it! Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees, oil, coal [kəul] and aluminium [,ælju'minjəm] are used up in enormous [i'nɔ:məs] amounts to make these products and the resources will one day be completely used up. We must cut down on energy use. * Sort out your rubbish. * Try to avoid buying plastic. * Don't buy over-packed goods. These are things that we can do easily, but it can avoid a lot of waste. Pollution The air, water and soil of habitats ['hæbitæt] all over the world have been, and are still being polluted in many different ways. This pollution affects the health of living things. This pollution affects the health of living things. Air is damaged by car and lorry fumes, and power stations create acid rain which destroys entire forests and lakes. When fossil fuels i.e. oil, gas and coal are burned to provide energy for lighting, cooking etc. they form polluting gases. Oils spills pollute sea water and kill marine life; chemical waste from factories and sewage works, and artificial fertilisers from farmland, pollute river water, killing wildlife and spreading disease. The careless or deliberate dumping of litter in the environment is not only unsightly but dangerous for wildlife too. For instance if you can do these: * Don’t drop litter. * Use less energy by switching off lights when rooms are not in use, not wasting hot water, not overheating rooms and not boiling more water than necessary when making a cup of tea! * Use a bicycle or walk instead of using a car for short trips. Then, many ,many pollution will disappear in our lives. Safety is in our hands .We must take part in more environmental protection activities, Plant more trees and flowers to make us live in a beautiful home with the blue sky ,blue water and green land forever. Safety is in our hands . Please try your best to tell people around you to deal with the rubbish , and to make a contribution to building our safe hometown . We should always remember in our mind that protecting the environment is our duty that we can never neglect [ni'ɡlekt]. Finally would you please let me end this speech with a little poem ['pəuim], “Be kind to the river. Be good to the trees. Smile at the sunshine, and bow [bəu] to the breeze [bri:z微风]. Be friendly to nature, and nature will be friendly to you!”

看一看我们周围的环境，校道旁有随手乱扔的垃圾，教学楼雪白的墙壁上有钢笔留下的字迹，事故停电后的乱吼乱叫声，等等。
这些不礼貌的现象，这些不礼貌的作风，都不就应是我们这群大学生的所作所为。
这是大事吗
不，这不是大事，这只但是是些芝麻绿豆的小事嘛，可为什么这些琐碎的事儿屡禁不止呢
难道是因为这都是些小事儿
难道是因为我们都是大学生吗
难道是因为我们都是知识分子吗
我们这些自以为是天之轿子的大学生们，总认为自我是不平凡的，是高贵的。
其实不然，古今中外，凡成大事者，无不从小事做起，我们的大救星毛主席年轻时不也在北京图书馆当过义务管理员吗
那时的他被人瞧不起受人轻视，根本就没有什么地位可谈，但他并没有感到自卑，相反他更加认真工作，更加努力学习，以至之后投 身于革命。
