屈平，字原，通常称为屈原，又自云名正则，号灵均，汉族，战国末期楚国丹阳（今湖北秭归）人。
屈原出生在楚国的一个贵族家庭，自幼聪慧好学，「博闻疆志，明于治乱，娴于辞令」，颇得楚怀王信任。
二十多岁就出任「左徒」，「入则与王图议国事，以出号令；出则接遇宾客，应对诸侯」。
根据当时的形势，他提出了彰明法度，举贤受能，改革政治，联齐抗秦等进步主张。
由于他的主张触犯了楚国贵族的利益，遭到了一批奸佞之徒的诽谤，怀王便疏远了他。
结果楚国朝政腐败，怀王被秦国诱去，做了三年俘虏，囚死在秦。
顷襄王继位后，一向反对屈原的公子子兰做了令尹，屈原在朝廷的地位更低了，先后两次被放逐。
