外国文学名著的英语翻译
文学名著呼唤翻译大家 缘起 中国的出版界改革开放以来进步很快,单说外国文学翻译图书的出版,就呈现出从未有过的万花争艳局面。
不过,大好形势下,也出现了一些值得关注的问题,比如浮躁和争利导致的翻译水平下降、重复出书、翻译大家的稀少等等。
为什么少有翻译大家 记者：我一直有一个困惑：现在外国文学著作出版得这么多、这么快,有些几乎是和原著同步出版,可是给人印象却是没有翻译大家。
到底是书出得太多把他们埋没了,还是确实没有了像傅雷、汝龙那样的翻译大师
余中先：大师不敢说,翻译大家还是有的,比如在座的李文俊先生,多年来孜孜矻矻翻译美国著名作家福克纳的作品,得到广泛的社会承认。
但又确实如你所说,翻译界存在着一些问题,影响着翻译水平的提高。
一个简单的例子为了赶出版速度,迅速占领市场,一些出版社往往让好几个译者合译一部作品。
结果,文风不一样,遣词造句的习惯各异,同一个意思会有不同的表达,这就不可避免地出现了“合译”而不“合一”的现象。
止庵：我们推许翻译大家时,往往不仅取决于该人的翻译水平,还应涉及所译是否名著,以及译作对中国读者的影响,这又与翻译在特定历史时期中所起的社会作用有关。
举个例子,以前述最末一项而论,后来任何一位译者都难与林纾相比,但他却是个不懂外文的“翻译大家”。
应该说,今日并非少有翻译大家,而是少有社会意义上的翻译大家。
李文俊：其实,翻译大家过去也并不多。
过去中国读书人古文底子深厚,至少,毛笔字要过得去,能用文言写作,会做旧体诗,这样的标准现在知识分子恐怕难以达到了。
但在外文水平、对原作的了解、各方面的知识、对国外生活的第一手接触等等方面,后起的译者对前辈还是可以有所超越的。
即使在中文的表达上也如此,今天的中文在精确、细致、复杂等方面,已较上世纪四五十年代进了一大步,这也有翻译家的功劳。
改革开放以来,大师也许没出现,但优秀的翻译家还是有不少的。
是否名著重译过多 记者：我还有个印象,现在名著的版本特别多,把读者弄得无所适从,不知道应该选择哪一本。

韩敬群： 名著重译过多乃是不争的事实。
这是市场引导的结果,对于那些已经进入公有领域的名著,大家确实都想占有自己的份额,分一杯羹是可以理解的。
问题是有些名著明明有了公认的好译本,再出新版,未必能做到后胜于前,只能造成人力财力浪费。
何况国内翻译人才本来就稀缺,一窝蜂地集中到少数几本书上,必然忽视对其他重要作品的翻译。
一个让人痛心的例子是：被公认为近代西方传记文学开山鼻祖的《约翰逊博士传》（英国鲍斯威尔著）,内地至今没出版过好的译本,只是中国社会科学出版社引进了由台湾学者罗珞珈、莫洛夫翻译,台湾志文出版社出版的浓缩本,这个版本的译文质量只能说差强人意。
止庵： 名著重译过多需要具体分析。
原有译本译文太过陈旧,或有所删节,或所据版本不佳,另外推出新的译本,应该说是好事。
但如果不能做到推陈出新,大可不必多此一举。
李文俊：名著重译本多了一些,确实是浪费力量。
不过好像也不能算是重大失误。
倘若能做到让读者自己不想去买水平低的重译本,问题不就解决了吗
优秀的出版家要设法使自己的出版物质量好,价钱便宜。
他们还要像商人一样善于打通出版渠道。
自己不下功夫,光想让“上头”拿出条条框框禁止别人做这做那,这是一种要不得的官气与霸气。
是否心浮气躁轻易出手 记者：普遍认为,现在浮躁之风也在翻译出版界劲吹。
为了求快,在第一时间占有资源,很多译者不顾忌翻译质量,匆忙出手;出版社也是萝卜快了不洗泥,这种状况当然不可能出版上佳译本。
李文俊： 我认为“心浮气躁,轻易出手”不是竞争状态造成的,而是贪欲造成的。
好像不管是《圣经》还是《佛经》,都是这么说的,它们还认定贪欲必然会给贪欲所有者带去苦果。
但愿如此。
止庵： 现在一本书从确定译介到最终出书,周期经常只有短短数月,很难保证质量。
余中先： 当一个中国读者读一本翻译作品时,实际是在读这位中国译者用他自己的文字转达的外国原作者的文字、文体、文笔乃至文本。
译者文字水平的高低,翻译时下的功夫深浅,所理解并转达的原作精髓的程度……总之,译本的好坏,往往决定了中国读者对原作的认识、理解、欣赏、认同、接受,决定了一本外国文学作品在中国的命运。
因此,读者在购买和阅读外国文学作品时,一定要有“译本意识”,在看过了书名和作者名之后,还得仔细看一看封面上的译者名,接下来还得看一看出版社的名字（做事认真、规矩的出版社值得读者信赖）。
当然,最好还是去浏览一下内中的东西。
是否名编奇缺亦造成质量下降 记者：这个问题是余中先先生提出来的,我觉得心有灵犀。
编辑的工作确实很重要,这个环节出了问题会导致严重后果。
韩敬群：按照常识来理解,外文图书的责任编辑应该精通外文才能胜任工作。
老牌的外国文学图书出版社,都配备有素质一流的外文编辑。
比如人民文学出版社的楼适夷、萧乾、赵少侯、孙用、屠岸、王央乐诸先生,上海译文出版社的韩侍桁、草婴、方平诸先生等。
他们不但是一流的编辑,还是一流的翻译家, 由他们来承担责任编辑的工作,图书质量当然会有保证。
今天很多出版社出版外文书,未必配备了熟悉相关语种的外文编辑。
即使有配置,也未必要求他们认真核对原文。
所以当前的出版物,我认为存在两个方面的显著问题：学术图书怕对引文,翻译图书怕对原文。
我曾读过一本名社出版的翻译书,仅下册之内,硬伤就不下百处。
我还曾有机会担任一本翻译图书的二审,最后发现我所做的主要工作,其实是把一审的改动再恢复为原译,因为他完全是根据中文在处理译稿。
当然,著名的出版人、以编辑外国文学图书享誉业内的刘硕良先生,据说并不以外文见长,但他主持编辑的《获诺贝尔文学奖作家丛书》却成为几代中国作家与文学青年的精神食粮。
刘先生的办法是完全信任、选择专家。
他与国内翻译界几乎所有语种的名家都有广泛的联系与深厚的友情。
这一套丛书中,他请董衡巽、冯亦代等译海明威,李文俊、陶洁译福克纳,吕同六译皮兰德娄,罗新璋译纪德等等,都是极一时之选。
余中先：人民文学出版社的编辑,历来在编辑校订的文字工作中肯下工夫。

人文社的编辑提出,以前出版的李健吾译本由于问世较早,某些语言与当代语言习惯有了一定的距离。
于是编辑与李的版权继承人研究,决定由出版社编辑负责核校,重新编辑加工,由李的女儿李维永审阅认定。
这样产生的新本子,既保持了李健吾先生译文的原貌,又消弭了原译文中的若干小疵点,算得上是“一流的选题,一流的翻译,一流的编辑”了。
