故事讲的是一个名叫庄鸿的人从学校回家后没找到姐姐，后来才知道姐姐已经死了。
原来庄鸿的姐姐是在一所高等小学念书，她的老师们每个都夸她是前途不可限量，可是后来由于父母去世，照顾他们的叔叔经济上又受了损失，祖母年纪又老了，家里没人帮她料理，便叫姐姐不要再读书了，而且在那个年代，男孩子将来成绩好是可以当官的，而都认为女孩子多读书是没用的，所以庄鸿的姐姐便退学在家帮忙干活，她虽然很失望，但从来没有说出来，每天庄鸿放学回来，她总是笑脸相迎，嘘寒问暖。
庄鸿的姐姐身体本来瘦弱，又终日劳碌，更因为她失去了希望，精神上又抑郁，最后生病而死。
庄鸿说：“平日这灯下，便是，今日却成了地狱，没有一个地方一件事情，不是使我触目伤心的。
”看到这里，我的眼泪不知不觉流了下来。
