上个月北区有书展，为了不至于在大热天跑一趟却空手而归，我才买下了这本书，但是因为要准备考试等原因，一直没有怎么去翻它，知道最近闲了下来，才在图书馆的空调重新拿起了它。
这本书最初是由英文写成，之后才又作者（黄仁宇）翻译修订成中文，因为是作者亲自翻译，又得到中国社会学院文学研究所沈玉成等人的帮助，所以读起来的时候相当的通顺流畅，而绝无生硬晦涩之感。
当然，一本书能够吸引人，最重要的，还是其描述的内容以及作者所要阐述的观点和思想。
书的英文名字叫做“1587，A Year of No Significance: The Ming Dynasty in Decline”。
在书的一开头，作者便解释了这个书名：这看似平平淡淡的一年，却实为历史发展的转折点，而其前后的诸多事件，以及其间的因果关联，才是历史的重点，也是本书所要讨论的地方。
而书中选择了这一年，一个重要的原因，则是对前任首辅大臣张居正清算事件的完结。
序言里，作者说，“中国两千年来，以道德代替法制，至明代而极，这就是一切问题的症结”。
明朝从开国皇帝朱洪武开始，便已经有意识的在重用文官，经过数百年的发展，到了万历当皇帝的时候，早已形成了一个成熟的文官集团和管理体系。
而首辅大臣作为他们之中拥有最高地位的代表者，必然是德高望重而且拥有者相当的政治才华和手段，以及忧国忧民，以天下为己任的责任心的。
而由于万历即位的时候年龄尚幼，张居正身上同时还肩负了小皇帝的抚养和教育重任。
于是，1572年秋天，也就是九岁的万历皇帝即位的那一年之后，“他（万历）每天的功课有三项内容：经书，书法，历史”。
