第一个Book Review - Night by Elie WieselNight, by Elie Wiesel, is a hard book to read. The writing is clear and the volume is short, but it is difficult nonetheless. Who wants to read about torture and genocide, about people being ripped from their homes, losing their faith and turning on their own families? It is depressing, to say the least.Night is not, however, primarily about making the reader sad or dwelling on the past. It is about remembering. Wiesel wrote his memoir so that we would remember what happened and remember what civilized humans are capable of.Part of me wants this book to do more than remember. I am disturbed by the fact that Wiesel never returns to hope or faith. He raises big questions about humanity and suffering, but the book never points toward a meaningful answer. I want redemption, or at least some hint of light.But Wiesel did not experience light, and Night will not let the reader pretend the Holocaust was anything other than what it was. Wiesel tells the complete truth about his experience, and the reader is left with hard questions.Remembering, however, is not a fruitless task. We remember so that we can tackle the big questions honestly and so we can change. We remember because Rwanda and Darfur prove the lessons of the Holocaust still need to be learned. We may not want to remember, but we should. It engages the reader with the terrifying real-life experiences of the Holocaust. Hold on to your seat belts while Ellie Wiesel transforms into the everyday life of a prisoner in a concentration camp. This book teaches us about the hardships and challenges Eliezer (main character) had to go through as a prisoner at a concentration camp. It shows us a father, son bond that it is so powerful that they live for each other. It is truly inspiring. It makes you wonder how your life would be if you were separated from your family members, unexpectedly, then never saw them again. One of the things that affected me most to the book was how Elie shows Eliezer’s emotional and mental breakdowns. For example when the Kapo was beating Eliezer’s dad, Eliezer did nothing but stand back and watch. In the book he is thinking to himself why he did nothing about it. Eliezer feels guilty because he knows before the Nazi’s came he would have stood up for his dad. You truly experience how living in fear can affect your whole outlook on life. The book has no fairy tale ending, but that is the intent of it! It deals with family interactions, hard conditions and the reality of how being a prisoner in a WW2 concentration camp is so desolate and devastating. Wiesel tells the complete truth about his experience, and the reader is left with hard questions.Remembering, however, is not a fruitless task. It engages the reader with the terrifying real-life experiences of the Holocaust. Hold on to your seat belts while Ellie Wiesel transforms into the everyday life of a prisoner in a concentration camp. This book teaches us about the hardships and challenges Eliezer (main character) had to go through as a prisoner at a concentration camp. It shows us a father, son bond that it is so powerful that they live for each other. It is truly inspiring. It makes you wonder how your life would be if you were separated from your family members, unexpectedly, then never saw them again. One of the things that affected me most to the book was how Elie shows Eliezer’s emotional and mental breakdowns. For example when the Kapo was beating Eliezer’s dad, Eliezer did nothing but stand back and watch. In the book he is thinking to himself why he did nothing about it. Eliezer feels guilty because he knows before the Nazi’s came he would have stood up for his dad. You truly experience how living in fear can affect your whole outlook on life. The book has no fairy tale ending, but that is the intent of it! It deals with family interactions, hard conditions and the reality of how being a prisoner in a WW2 concentration camp is so desolate and devastating.
