其发源地，一说为安徽省怀宁县黄梅山，另一说为湖北省黄冈市黄梅县一带的采茶调，清末传入毗邻的安徽省怀宁县等地区，与当地民间艺术结合，并用安庆方言歌唱和念白，逐渐发展为一个新生的戏曲剧种。
一度被称为“怀腔”、“皖剧”。
2006年5月20日经国务院批准列入第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。
黄梅戏的起源最早可追溯到唐代。
据史料记载，早于唐代时期，黄梅采茶歌就很盛行，经宋代民歌的发展、元代杂剧的影响，逐渐形成民间戏曲雏形。
至明清，黄梅县戏风更盛。
在湖北、江西、福建、浙江、江苏、香港、台湾等地亦有黄梅戏的专业或业余的演出团体，受到广泛的欢迎。
