公元398年，北魏建都平城（今大同市），北魏天师道长寇谦之（公元365-448）仙逝前留下遗训：要建一座空中寺院，以达上延霄客，下绝嚣浮。

因此，悬空寺始建至今，地处历代兵家必争之地的恒山，不但没有遭到破坏，而且历代都加以维修、完善，（悬空寺的现貌是保存了金大定18年修缮后的基本原貌），足以说明天下渴望和平的无穷力量。
悬空寺原名玄空阁，是取道家之玄，佛家之空，形貌楼阁而得名，后称悬空寺，是因“悬”与 “玄”的谐音，以及寺院象悬挂在半崖之上，习惯地称作悬空寺。
