长江发源于我国青藏高原的唐古拉山，全长6300km，它不仅是我国最长的河流，也是世界第三长河，仅次于非洲的尼罗河和南美洲的亚马孙河，长江流经了我国的青海、西藏、云南、四川、湖北、湖南、江西、安徽、江苏、上海等11个省、市、自治区，最后汇入东海。
长江流域面积为180万平方公里，将近占我国国土面积的1\\\/5。
习惯上，人们依据长江干流的地理环境及水文特征划分为三段。
