寺坐南朝北，以龙珠金山为中心，四周名胜古迹星罗棋布，称谓“六山十八景”。
内局神兽六山环绕，外有九龙盘朝，是名符其实的龙盘虎伏盘龙阁。
诸景点中尤以佛阁龙泉、盘龙温泉、拱辰留迹，蛤蟆顶印、盘古石泉、缘水浮舟、九龙潭（水库）等天然奇观令人流连忘返。
特别是叠叠岭上峰，巍巍千佛塔，登塔远眺，九龙戏，惟妙惟肖，令人回味无穷，堪称潮汕小五台之宝地。
主体建筑系单层高阁，坐东面向西北。
周围有三亭一峰环绕，即北面拱辰亭、西面金华亭、东面紫气亭、东北面天乙峰。
据保存在盘龙阁的《惠来正堂告示》（梅林曾为惠来县辖地）石碑记载，当初建为讲堂，宣讲《圣谕广训》，后改为道教堂。
20世纪50年代，道场停止活动，场地为迁至此处耕作的农民居住。

当时他日夜不辞劳苦地奔走于粤东各处和暹罗、印尼、新加坡等地，向各地善男信女宣传善事， 他的净修梵行，禅心高德感动了不少人，经多年努力，募集了一大笔资金，建成了初具规模的盘龙阁寺。
寺庙建成了，他也圆寂了。
为了纪念他的功绩，后人把他的骨头尸首连他的指甲都烘干后，重新装扮，然后封存在上庵玻璃柜内供人瞻仰，土改后的1956年被废。
根据保存在这里的《惠来县正堂告示》的石碑记载，盘龙阁最初建为讲堂，宣讲《圣谕广训》，后为道教场所。
在盘龙阁下庵池塘旁的广场上，至今还完好地保存有一个清光绪年间普宁涂洋村人献的镇宫宝物，是二人多高空腹的外面铸有龙凤、花草、文字，玲珑奇巧的“盘龙阁寺万年宝鼎”，俗称三层大肚的焚纸钱的大铁炉，也叫三脚鼎。

在1956年至1992年这一段时间，普宁池尾华取、新寮等村一个“移民社”林、张、刘、赖等姓共150多人在此耕作居住，后来，他们陆续迁回原籍。
1961年，盘龙阁被列为普宁县文物保护单位。
1990年，经广东省宗教事务局批准，盘龙阁开放为佛教活动场所。
盘龙阁原来分上庵和下庵，前后占地4平方公里，经不断建设，如今上下庵的房子已连成一片。
整个工程除了山体维持，道路建筑外，还新建了上庵的盘龙阁寺大厅、大雄宝殿、藏经楼、观音阁、地藏阁、廊庑等。
又新建了将军亭、观音亭、如音亭、拱辰亭4个亭。
在东南面，前几年又建了一处宫殿式的“园通庵”建筑群。
全庵都是宫殿式杉桁石砖水泥琉璃瓦的建筑结构，规模宏伟，气势非凡。
其中单超过两人高的铁或石镂空造型精美别致的“盘龙阁寺万年宝鼎”就有八个，实为少见。
同时还在山顶上新建了三层多高的“千佛塔”，站在塔旁，不仅可以居高临下看到山下各处的梵宇僧室，与松柏上下其间，还可以眺望梅林镇崭新的鳞次栉比的高楼大厦。
在盘龙阁上下庵之间，绿树丛中，潺潺泉水边，新建了四栋二至五层高很长的楼房，楼房内有普宁市佛教协会办公室、活动室、大厨房、大餐厅，和可以容纳100人的大宾馆，专门接待国内外八方香客和游人居住。
在绿树下，到处十分清洁，空气清新，又有亭台石凳供人憩息。
每逢夏天雨后天晴之际，坐在山边石上，鸟雀鸣于树上，蜂蝶舞于花间。
耳听沸沸汩汩的泉声，眼观曲折清新的泉流，使人烦恼顿消，心旷神怡，其乐悠悠，实为旅游度假之胜地。
前几年，由寺庙出资新开了一条水泥公路，从G324国道线经古安通到盘龙阁，另一条经费由梅林镇人民捐资修筑的水泥公路从梅林镇通到盘龙阁，也方便了游客到盘龙阁旅游区观光。
两条公路上共建了四个古式高大的造型端庄典雅的三山门石牌坊，增加了此寺庙的文化内涵和气派，使观者未进寺庙先有肃穆敬畏之感。
现在每年农历七月，盘龙阁都会举行一次盛大的“盂兰盛会”，十分热闹。
每逢春节后一个多月内，从各地涌来的香客和游人，车水马龙，络绎不绝。
盘龙阁乃粤东地区建筑面积最广阔的建筑群的寺庙，也是最多僧尼的寺庙。
