另外,从这里还可以看到沧浪亭的另一个有别于苏州其它古典园林的特色,就是:打破高墙围绕,自成丘壑的封闭式格局,以临水的建筑群将园内园外的山水有机地融为一体,形成一种开放性的布局特色。
明、清时期,这里一直是官绅宴饮、文人雅聚的场所,因此,一般认为沧浪亭是中国古代最早的公共园林之一。

[碑记厅] 这里现在是沧浪亭的门厅。
因为这里东、西两侧墙上嵌有旧时园主苏舜钦的《沧浪亭记》,清代巡抚宋荦、梁章钜和张树声的《重修沧浪亭记》以及清代僧人济航的《沧浪亭图》等石刻,所以我们也把这里称为碑记厅。
从这些石刻可以了解沧浪亭的旧貌和概况,因此,这些 石刻极具史料价值。
[主山] 出碑记厅,迎面看到的就是横卧于园中央的主山。
这是一座土多石少的土山,据考是宋代遗物。

这也体现了北宋时期士大夫造园重在立意,不事雕琢的特点。
主山东部用黄石垒砌,山间小道高下逶迤,桥梁溪谷,引人人胜。
西部是清末用湖石等重修的。
西南面峭壁下,凿一小池,从山上望下看,有如临深渊之感。
池边一石上刻有俞樾先生篆书的“流玉”二字,点出这小池之水犹如一块流动的碧玉。

园内园外大小如此悬殊的两片水面在这里相互呼应,但又情趣各异。
