1931年，教育家邰爽秋其保等在南京中央集会，发表要求“改善教师待遇，保师工作和增进教师修养”的宣言，并议定6月6日为 教师节，也称双六节。
不久，国民党政府先是同意6月6日为教师节，后又将教师节改为8月27日(农历孔子生日)。
建国后，中央人民政府曾恢复6月6日为教师节， 教育部通告各地教育工作者，可以根据实际情况自行组织庆祝活动。
1951年全国教育工会成立，教育工作者被确认为工人阶级的一部分。
1951年4月19 日，教育部长和中国教育工会全国委员会主席发表书面谈话，宣布“五一国际劳动节”同时为教师节。
但由于这一天缺少教师的特点，执行的结果并不理想。
特别是 1957年以后，在“左”的思想影响下，教师不受重视，教师节实际上已不再存在。
近年来，我国政府采取了许多措施，动员全社会尊重教师，提高教师的地位，改善教师的工作和生活条件。
为了进一步提高教师的政治地位和社会地位，形成尊师重教、尊重知识、尊重人才的社会风尚，推动教育事 业的发展，根据全国人大代表、全国政协委员和各界人士，特别是各地教师的多次提议，以及各地开展尊师活动的经验，国务院于1985年1月11日，向全国人 民代表大会常务委员会提出关于确定每年9月10日为教师节的议案。
同年1月21日举行的第六届全国人民代表大会上，同意关于建立教师节的议案，决定9月 10日为教师节。
