Hume认为知识来源于感觉经验，知识是由简单知觉综合为复合观念。
复合观念由命题来表达。
他区分观念间关系的分析命题和事实间关系的综合命题，前者是必然真理，后者是偶然真理。
休谟怀疑事实间因果关系的基础，认为不能由事实序列的重复推断出其间因果的必然性。
但他声称自己的怀疑论为“温和的怀疑论”，以区别于对真理宗教式的迷狂，在理性上怀疑是为得到愉悦，在实践上仍然按着一般的观念来行事。
