形容汉语的英文句子结构总汇76句

摘要:学术界有许多关于英汉表达差异的论断,这些论断多强调由各自思维模式、表达方式、语法特征、修辞手段、语体风格差异所导致的表述形式上的巨大差别,多数学者认为英语表达相对较为“繁琐”,而汉语则相对“简洁”;而实际使用中的英汉语并不完全符合“英语比较‘繁复’、汉语比较‘简洁’的论述”,有时“繁复”的是汉语而“简洁”的却是英语。

关键词:英汉;简洁;繁复

论及英汉语言表述的差异,学术界已有许多著名论断,亦有不少人著书立说加以论说,但凡此种种,作者多强调由各自思维模式、表达方式、语法特征、修辞手段、语体风格差异所导致的表述形式上的巨大差别。多数作者认为英语表达相对“繁琐”,汉语则相对“简洁”,理由是英语比较喜好采用形象化的语言,用委婉含蓄的句式,用平实的口吻对事物进行描述,而汉语则倾向于用白描手法,用华丽的语言直截了当的对事物进行陈述和描写,且汉语以简洁的形式所表达的声势和力度又远非“冗长”的英语表达所能比的。

但作者在长期研读有关英汉语对比的素材和论述及在几年的教学实践中经常碰到一些与上述类型截然相反的语言现象,即:实际使用中的英汉语并不完全符合“英语比较‘繁复’、汉语比较‘简洁’的论述”,相反,有时“繁复”的是汉语而“简洁”的却是英语。

一、英汉词汇的“简洁”与“繁复”

1、1 英汉两种语言中都存在着很多修饰语,通过描述事物来表达情感,在英汉两种语言中,尤其是用几个词语来修饰一个事物时,英语经常只需几个简单的词汇就可以把该物描述得很形象;但在汉语表达中,人们不仅需要采用与英语表达意思相同或相似的形容词来修饰,而且经常需要在每一个形容词前面加上一个相关词汇来使该描述更加简单易懂。如:

例1:Keith:a little yellow, ragged, lame unshaven begat。 ( John Galsworthy)

基思:一个讨饭的,身材矮小,面色苍黄,衣衫褴褛,瘸腿,满脸胡子。

例2:She had such a kindly, smiling, tender, gentle, generous heart of her own。 (W。M。Thackeray: Vanity Fair)

她心底厚道,为人乐观,性情温柔,待人和蔼,气量又大。

在上述例子中,英语表达非常简单,几个形容词就把“Keith”和“She”描述得非常形象,为了达到相同的效果,汉语表述则须在每一个形容词前面加上表示性质的词语,如“身材”、“面色”、“心底”、“性情”等。因此可见英汉两种语言在描述事物时的简单与繁复。

另外,汉语常用双音节词来描述事物。双音节词可使汉语音节匀称,成双成对。表达的匀称使对偶、对照、排比、反复和重叠成了中国人喜欢的表达方式。与英语相比,汉语的均衡美和节奏美虽是一大特色,其重复的现象对英汉翻译来说却很难达到类似的美境。

如:绿草萋萋,白云冉冉,彩蝶翩翩,这日子是如此清新可爱。。。。。。表达的意境多么美妙; 而It was a day as fresh as grass growing up and clouds going over and butterflies coming down can make it。表达的意境只能是非常家常的一道风景了。

1、2 连词二者必不可少的词汇,既能使上下文在形式上形成一个整体,又能使上下文表达的意义更加清晰,因此在两种语言中连词都被频繁使用。部分汉语副词在句中语法作用的“兼职”使得对它的判断变得更为复杂,如“才”“也”“还”等跟连词使用时既有修饰作用,又有关联作用,如“只有。。。才。。。”“即使。。。也。。。”“不但。。。还。。。”等。而英语中虽然也大量使用连词,并且可能更频繁,但英语中连词一般不成对出现(如although不与but 连用,because不与so连用), 词汇在句子中“兼职”的情况就很少。

1、3 汉语中的部分反义词有时能够表达相同的意思,如意大利队大胜巴西队 = 意大利队大败巴西队,“胜”和“败”是反义词,却表达完全相同的意思。同时,汉语中有些非常奇妙、形象却吓人的词语,如“小时候吃父母,上了大学吃哥哥姐姐,大学毕业以后就开始吃自己。”“吃”在英语中是“eat”,“have”或“take”,如果直接这样翻译后果就非常可怕。用反义词表达相同意思及用“吃”等词形象的表达时非常简单,但对不以汉语为母语的'人来说确实是很难弄懂的语言现象。 二、英汉结构的“简单”与“繁复”

由于英语是“形合”语言,即句子注重结构形式上的完整,注重形式规范,通过各种连接手段使句子保持聚集状态,并且句子各成分或者词语之间在人称、数、性和意义等方面必须遵循包括语法一致、意义一致、就近原则在内的原则,而这种原则使英语句子结构严格受到形态的约束,因而句式严谨、规范、刻板且缺乏弹性。相比之下,由于汉语是“意合”语言,即汉语强调通过意义连接句子,各单位之间的关系需要通过意义上的关联才能了解,而不需要使用连词等连接手段达到形式上的整体。因此,汉语的主谓结构要更复杂。

如:书读完了。(表受事)英语则必须用被动式才能与汉语保持主语一致。(英语中有少量动词具有类似特点,如This cloth is easy to wash。中的wash,但此种情况并不常见。)

汉语的谓语也复杂多样,可以用动词,名词,形容词,如天高云淡,海阔天空。(形容词做谓语)

The sky is high and the clouds are pale。

且由于汉语不受形态约束即谓语没有单复数之分,也没有“主谓一致”的束缚。这种关系上的灵活性使汉语在特定情况下比英语更难以理解。

王力说,“西洋语的结构好像连环,虽则环与环都联络起来,毕竟有联络的痕迹;中国与的结构好象无缝天衣,只是一块一块的硬凑,凑起来还不让它有痕迹。西洋语法是硬的,没有弹性的;中国语法是软的,富裕弹性的”。西洋语的这种联系是显性的,而中国语是隐性的,相对而言,显性的比隐性的在结构上更容易让人理解。

三、英汉文化中的不对等现象引起的“繁”“简”之争

任何两种文化中都有不对等的情况,英汉文化亦然。在英汉文化翻译中,由于各自独特的社会、政治、经济、历史、风俗等原因而导致的文化现象,两者之间就可能出现文化空缺,因而造成文化不对等,尤其表现在各文化所特有的各种实物和谚语、习语等语言表达形式上。在将原语(英语)翻译成目的语(汉语)时,其方法之一就是在译文后补充说明。

如英语Sesame Street 所对应的汉语是芝麻街,文化的不对等不仅造成翻译中的文化缺失,更让汉语阅读者觉得很难懂,此时要在后面补充说明,即:美国教小孩子学说话的电视节目。

四、结论

许多方面的原因导致总体上英语比汉语要复杂,但凡事皆有例外,正如文中所言,汉语中其实也有很多比英语表达更繁复的情况。但本文并非想推翻已经得出的结论,只是就部分语言现象加以讨论。只要读者愿意去找寻,相信还有更多例证可以支持文中的观点。

什么叫句子成分呢?句子的组成成分叫句子成分。在句子中,词与词之间有?there那里?混淆。此结构后跟名词,表示?(存在)有某事物? 试比较:There is a 一定的组合关系,按照不同的关系,可以把句子分为不同的组成成分。句子成分boy there.(那儿有一个男孩。)/前一个there无实意,后一个there为副词?那里?。 由词或词组充当。现代汉语里一般的句子成分有六种,即主语、谓语、宾语、定基本句型 三: S V O (主+谓+宾) 语、状语和补语。英语的基本成分有七种:主语(subject)、谓语(predicate)、表此句型句子的共同特点是:谓语动词都具有实义,都是主语产生的动作,但语(predicative)、宾语(object)、定语(attribute状语(adverbial) 和补语(complement)。 不能表达完整的意思,必须跟有一个宾语,即动作的承受者,才能使意思完整。

英语句子的基本结构可以归纳成五种基本句型及其扩大、组合、省略或倒装。这类动词叫做及物动词。宾语位于及物动词之后,一般同主语构成一样,不同的掌握这五种基本句型,是掌握各种英语句子结构的基础。 是构成宾语的代词必须是?代词宾格?,如:me,him,them等 S│V及物动词│O

主语:可以作主语的成分有名词,主格代词(如you),动词不定式,动名词等。基本句型 四: S V o O (主+谓+间宾+直宾) 主语一般在句首。注意名词单数形式常和冠词不分家!有些及物动词可以有两个宾语,如:give给,pass递,bring带,show显示。这两谓语:谓语由动词构成,是英语时态、语态变化的主角,一般在主语之后。不及个宾语通常人为间接宾语;物为直接宾语。间接宾语一般位于直接宾语之前。一物动词(vi.)没有宾语,形成主谓结构,如:We come.般的顺序为:动词 + 间接宾语 + 直接宾语。如:Give me a cup of tea,please. 此句型的句子有一个共同点,即句子的谓语动词都能表达完整的意思。这类动词强调间接宾语顺序为:动词 + 直接宾语 +介词+ 间接宾语。如: 叫做不及物动词,后面可以跟副词、介词短语、状语从句等。S│V 不及物动词) Show this house to Mr.Smith. 若直接宾语为人称代词:动词+ 代词直接宾语 +介1. 此句型的句子有一个共同的特点:句子谓语动词都不能表达一个完整的意思,7. I │told │him │that the bus was late. 8. He │showed │me │how to run the machine. 必须加上一个表明主语身份或状态的表语构成复合谓语,才能表达完整的意思。基本句型 五: S V O C (主+谓+宾+宾补) 这类动词叫做连系动词。系动词分两类:be, look, keep, seem等属一类,表示情况;此句型的句子的共同特点是:动词虽然是及物动词,但是只跟一个宾语还不get, grow, become, turn等属另一类,表示变化。be 本身没有什么意义,只起连系主能表达完整的意思,必须加上一个补充成分来补足宾语,才能使意思完整。 语和表语的作用。其它系动词仍保持其部分词义。感官动词多可用作联系动词:look 宾语补足语:位于宾语之后对宾语作出说明的成分。宾语与其补足语有逻辑well/面色好,sound nice/听起来不错,feel good/感觉好,smell bad/难闻上的主谓关系,它们一起构成复合宾语。 S │V(是系动词)│ P His face │turned │red. 名词/代词宾格 + 名词The war made him a soldier. 1. 但常用的英语句子并不都象基本句型这样简短,这些句子除了基本句型的成分不变外,通常是在这些成分的前面或后面增加一些修饰语(modifier)而加以扩大。这些修饰语可以是单词(主要是形容词、副词和数词),也可以是各种类型的短语(主要是介词短语、不定式短语和分词短语)。我们称之为:定语、状语

名词、动名词、动词不定式、分词等充当。如The ones who really want it are ourselves.

Come 一般表示事物由坏变好,结果是好的。如:Dreams come true.

一、 定语:定语是对名词或代词起修饰、限定作用的词、短语或句子,汉语中常用?……的?表示。定语通常位于被修饰的成分前。若修饰some,any,every,no构成的复合不定代词时,(如:something、nothing);或不定式、分词短语作定语、从句作定语时,则定语通常置后。副词用作定语时须放在名词之后。

形容词作定语:Tom is a handsome boy. There is a good boy.

数词作定语相当于形容词:There are two boys in the room. Two boys need two pens.The two boys are students.

代词或名词所有格作定语:His boy needs Tom's penHis name is Tom. There are two boys of Toms there.

介词短语作定语:There are two boys of 9,and three of 10.

The boy in the classroom needs a pen of yours.The boy in blue is Tom.

名词作定语:The boy needs a ball pen. It is a ball pen. There is only one ball pen 副词作定语:The boy there needs a pen.The best boy here is Tom. 不定式作定语:The boy to write this letter needs a pen.。

The boy to write this letter is Tom. There is nothing to do today.

分词(短语)作定语:The smiling boy needs a pen bought by his mother. The pen bought by her is made in China. There are five boys left.。

定语从句:The boy you will know is Tom. There are five boys who will play the game. The boy who is reading needs the pen which you bought yesterday. 六、状语:

状语在句子中的位置很灵活,常见情况为:通常在句子基本结构之后,强调时放在句首;修饰形容词或副词时,通常位于被修饰的词之前;表示时间、地点、目的的状语一般位于句子两头,强调时放在句首,地点状语一般须在时间状语之前;一些表示不确定时间(如:often)或程度(如:almost)的副词状语通常位于be动词、助动词、情态动词之后,动词之前。有时状语在句中的某个位置会引起歧义应注意,如The boy calls the girl in the classroom.一般理解成?男孩喊教室里的女孩(?此时in the classroom为girl的定语),也可以理解为?男孩在教室里喊女孩(?此时in the classroom为地点状语),最好写作?In the classroom,the boy calls the girl.' 副词(短语)作状语:The boy needs a pen very much.(程度状语) The boy really needs a pen.(程度状语)

The boy needs a pen now./Now,the boy needs a pen./The boy,now,needs a pen.(时状)介词短语作状语:In the classroom,the boy needs a pen.(地点状语) Before his mother,Tom is always a boy.(条状)

分词(短语)作状语:He sits there,asking for a pen(表示伴随状态) Having to finish his homework,the boy needs a pen.(原因状语) Frightened,he sits there soundlessly./((原因状语)

不定式作状语:The boy needs a pen to do his homework.(目的状语)

To make his dream come true,Tom becomes very interested in business. 名词作状语:Come this way!/走这条路!(方向状语)

英语中的状语用来修饰动词、形容词或副词,主要由副词、介词短语、动词不定式、分词充当,或由连词引导状语从句,表示时间、地点、程度、目的、方式,比较、让步、条件、原因、结果、伴随等。

(1) 时间状语I often get up at 5:30 in the morning.

Hearing the news, they felt very excited.Go along this street until you reach the end. (2) 地点状语 Pandas only live in China. You should put the book where it was. (3) 程度状语I have quite a lot of work to do.

(4) 目的状语We?ll go to the beach for a picnic this Sunday. He took some change from his pocket to buy a newspaper. She got up early so that she could catch the first bus.

(5) 方式状语We usually go to school on foot. Please do it as I told you. (6) 让步状语Though she has a lot of money, she is unhappy. No matter what happens, I will never lose heart.

(7) 条件状语If you don?t work hard, you?ll fall behind the others. Given more attention, the flowers would have grown better.

(8) 比较状语Your watch is not the same as mine. Mike is not as (so) tall as Jack. (9) 原因状语We didn?t go to the park because of the bad weather. I?m glad to meet you. Being ill, he didn?t go to school. (10) 结果状语He left early, so that he caught the train. The wind was so strong that we could hardly move forward.

(11) 伴随状语The doctor hurried off, with a medicine box under his arm. The teacher came into the classroom, followed by a group of his students. 七、宾语补足语

宾语补足语主要用来补充说明宾语,与宾语之间存在逻辑上的主谓关系或动宾关系,可由名词、形容词、动词不定式、分词等充当。如:

Tom found the climb quite easy.Don?t be so formal. Call me Jim. I?m finished. Let?s go now. You must keep it clean.

I have the car waiting.We had the machine repaired. Why don?t you have your hair cut? He had his finger cut.

I had my watch stolen yesterday. I have a lot of work to do.

She has plenty of clothes to wear. He made me repeat the story. Rain makes plants grow. 注意:后跟名词作宾语补足语的动词有 call, name, think, make, choose 等,后跟形容词作宾语补足语的谓语动词有 keep, find, get, think, make 等。动词不定式作宾语补足语时,当谓语动词为感官动词(如 feel, see, hear, notice, watch, observe, listen to, look at 等),使役动词(如 let, have, make 等),动词不定式不带 to。 八、同位语:同位语是在名词或代词之后并列名词或代词对前者加以说明的成分,近乎于后置定语。如:We students should study hard. / (students是we的同位语,都是指同一批?学生?)We all are students. / (all是we的同位语,都指同样的?我们?)九、独立成分:有时句子中会有一些与句子没有语法联系的成分,称为句子独立成分(注意:区别于分词独立结构)。感叹词:oh,hello,aha,ah,等肯定词yes否定词no称呼语:称呼人的用语。插入语:一些句中插入的 I think , I believe,等。

如: The story,I think,has never come to the end.情态词,表示说话人的语气(多作为修饰全句的状语):perhaps也许,maybe大概,actually实际上,certainly当然,等。 十、分词独立结构:分词作状语时其逻辑主语与句子的主语一致! 否则应有自己的逻辑主语,构成分词独立结构。

例:错句:Studying hard,your score will go up.正确:(1) Studying hard,you can make your score go up.或 (2)If you study hard,your score will go up.

什么叫句子成分呢?句子的组成成分叫句子成分。在句子中,词与词之间有一定的组合关系,按照不同的关系,可以把句子分为不同的组成成分。句子成分由词或词组充当。现代汉语里一般的句子成分有六种,即主语、谓语、宾语、定语、状语和补语。英语的基本成分有七种:主语(subject)、谓语(predicate)、表语(predicative)、宾语(object)、定语(attribute)、状语(adverbial) 和补语(complement)。

一、认识初高中英语的区别:

即将开始的高中学习生活,特别是英语的学习是与初中阶段有着很大不同:

1.课本编排上的区别:初中的每一个单元是分为4课的,每篇中有的是对话,有的是阅读文,也配有一些练习。

(四)表语:表语用以说明主语的身份、特征和状态,它一般位于系动词(如be, become, get, look, grow, turn, seem等)之后。表语一般由名词、代词、形容词、分词、数词、不定式、动名词、介词短语、副词及表语从句表示。例如:

(五)宾语:宾语表示动作的对象或承爱者,一般位于及物动词和介词后面。

(六)宾语补足语:英语中有些及物动词,除有一个直接宾语以外,还要有一个宾语补语,才能使句子的意义完整。带有宾语补足语的一般句型为:某些及物动词(如make等+宾语+宾补)。宾补可由名词、形容词、副词、不定式、分词、介词短语和从句充当。

He is proud to have passed the national college entrance examination.(不定式短语)

He is in the room making a model plane.(分词短语)

Wait a minute.(名词)

Once you begin, you must continue.(状语从句)

二、简单句、并列句和复合句

(一)句子种类两种分类法

1、按句子的用途可分四种:

1)陈述句(肯定、否定):He is six years old; She didn’t hear of you before.

2)疑问句(一般、特殊、选择、反意):

Do they like skating? How old is he?

Is he six or seven years old?

Mary can swim, can’t she?

3)祈使句:Be careful, boys.

Don’t talk in class.

4)感叹句:How clever the boy is!

2、按句子的结构可分三种:

1)简单句:只有一个主语(或并列主语)和一个谓语(或并列谓语)。

e.g. He often reads English in the morning.

Tom and Mike are American boys.

She likes drawing and often draws pictures for the wall newspapers.

2) 并列句:由并列连词(and, but, or等)或分号(;)把两个或两个以上的简单句连在一起构成。

e.g. You help him and he helps you.

The future is bright; the road is tortuous. 前途是光明的,道路是曲折的。

3)复合句:含有一个或一个以上从句的句子。

复合句包含:名词性从句(主语从句、宾语从句、表语从句和同位语从句)、定语从句和状语从句等。

4、主语+及物动词+双宾语(间接宾语+直接宾语):e.g. My father bought me a car.

5、主语+及物动词+复合宾语(宾语+宾补):e.g. Tom made the baby laugh.

注:其他各种句子都可由这一种基本句型扩展、变化或省略而构成。

(三)并列句的分类

1、表示连接两个同等概念,常用and, not only…but also…, neither…nor…, then等连接。e.g. The teacher’s name is Smith, and the student’s name is John.

2、表示选择,常用的连词有or, either…or…, otherwise等。

e.g. Hurry up, or you’ll miss the train.

3、表示转折,常用的连词有but, still, however, yet, while, when等。

e.g. He was a little man with thick glasses, but he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting.

4、表示因果关系,常用的连词有so, for, therefore等。

e.g. August is the time of the year for rive harvest, so every day I work from dawn until dark.

摘要:本文旨在从语言与文化语境的关系出发,阐明英汉语中的习语表达具有“显性”与“隐性”的特点。译者如果掌握英汉语中习语的关联因素及其语用意义,运用相应的方法进行翻译,就能准确传达英语习语和汉语习语所包含的语用用意,实现翻译的通达和文化的对接。

一、习语、文化与交际

英语和汉语在漫长的历史沉淀中,积累了大量的习语。习语是指“作为一个单位使用的,意义不能从其独立的组成部分得出的一种表达法。”[1]215可见,习语是经过长时间的提炼而形成的短语或句子,它带有浓厚的民族色彩和鲜明的文化内涵。习语是语言的精华,一种形象化的语言,含蓄典雅,意在言外,凝聚了人民智慧、民族语言的精华,可以引起丰富的联想,使语言变得富有生机和活力。

习语作为一种承载文化的语言载体具有鲜明的种族特征。习语和一个民族的历史背景、经济生活、地理环境、风俗习惯、宗教信仰、心理状态等密切相关。英汉两种语言中的习语源于不同的社会、历史传统和生活习性,所以,使用英语与汉语的人在思维习惯与表达方式上存在差异。但是另一方面,人们对世界的认知具有规律性,人的思维具有共同性。在两种语言,两种文化之间,一个民族用自己的语言所形成和表达的思想,另一个民族也可以用自己的语言来形成和表达。即,具有不同文化背景的民族可以用不同的习语表达相同的思想和情感。这使得跨文化的语言交际成为可能,也使各民族的文化交流成为可能。

二、习语的表达及翻译

习语是经过较长时间的使用才逐渐固定成形,传播使用。

就汉语广义的习语而言,通常包括成语、俗语、格言、歇后语、谚语、俚语、行话等。习语是人们在实践与认识的过程中提炼出来,而不同的民族的生活经验有相同的,也有不同的。相应地,英汉两种语言中的习语就可以分为相通的和不相通的。

对于怎样用一种习语很好地表达另一种语言的文化,常用“直译”与“意译”的思维方式去处理。但是,在什么时候用“直译”,什么时候用“意译”以及相应的“度”的把握是译者面临的难题。因此,译者不妨寻求一种新的方法来把握其度,从语用学角度,把该语言习语的“语用用意”(pragmatic force)作为参照,再采取相应的翻译表达方法。

“语用用意有两类:暗含的(i m p l i c i t)和明说的(explicit)。前者指言下之意,后者指字面的用意。”[2]186英汉语习语形成于不同的文化背景之中,每一条习语都有着不同的文化内涵,并具有各自的语言特点。译者在将英语习语转换成汉语习语表达时,力求英汉语习语的语用用意等效,对于相通的和不相通的可以分别采用不同的方法。比如,汉语的“雨后春笋”,可以借用英语“like mushrooms”来表达。然而,译成“likebamboo shoots after spring shower”也未尝不可。前者更利于英美文化背景的读者接受,因为英语中的“mushroom”(蘑菇)能形象表达迅速生长之势;后者,准确地译出字面意思,但对于对中国竹文化了解甚少的英美人很难从“bamboo shoots”中理解生命生长的盎然与速猛。选择哪一种表达就要根据语境来确定,考虑到习语的语用价值。

(一)“显性”习语的翻译表达

“显性”习语是指通过字面能够被直接理解的习语。这类习语在不同的文化背景下,也能表现出相似的思维方式,并且通过事物的推理、认知过程,在英汉语中有相近的语言表达。在这种情况下,一般直接套用另一种语言就可以传达出原文的语用用意。对于思维相通的习语,用另一种语言传递比较容易,可以有两种不同的表达方式。如:英汉两种语言中有些习语不但有相同的意义而且有相似的形象或比喻。在这种情况下直接使用另一语言就能很好地表达原意。例如汉语译成英语:易如反掌as easyas turning over one’s hand;如雷贯耳like the sound ofthunder in one’s ear;隔岸观火watching a fire acrossthe river;浑水摸鱼to fish in troubled waters;一只耳朵进,一只耳朵出to go in at one ear and out at the other.

或者英语译成汉语:in the same boat同舟共济,处境相同;

throw cold water on泼冷水;go through fire and water赴汤蹈火;in twos and threes三三两两;near and dear亲亲密密;Heroes would admire each other.英雄重英雄。对于不借用形象或比喻的、不带有民族特性的习语,可以直接套用,例如汉语译成英语:迂回曲折twists and turns;风卷残云like a whirlwind scattering wisps of clouds;突飞猛进byleaps and bounds.英语译成汉语:turn a deaf ear充耳不闻;

a thorn in one’s flesh肉中刺;at a second thought三思而行等。有些习语出自一些已经没有生命力的典故或历史故事,这种民族性可以淡化,仍然直接用另一种语言显性表达出来。

如:“塞翁失马,焉知非福”就可以译成“Misfortune mightbe a blessing in disguise”而不去考虑“塞翁”的故事。

上述译文基本上保留了原文的风格,简洁明了。但英汉两种语言毕竟是有差异的,有些差异使得英汉词语表达不可能在结构上,甚至意义上绝对的一一对应。这就需要调动“隐性”的翻译手段。但只要能反映出英汉浯习语之间共同的语用用意,达到交际的.目的,就是圆满的翻译。

(二)“隐性”习语的翻译表达

第二类习语是在英语与汉语中思维方式、形象表达上都存在一定差异。这类习语不能从其字面直接了解含义,如:“对kickthe bucket只存在一种理解和一种可能的反应,不会有对它字面上的理解”[3]126因此,这类习语只能用译文传达其语用用意,言外之意。这就需要译者首先要仔细体会原文的语用价值,然后再把其语用价值内化为目标语。例如汉语译成英语:一毛不拔Not a cent would be parted with;釜底抽薪go to the rootof the matter;十年树木,百年树人It takes ten years tocultivate trees,but a hundred to train people;真金不怕火炼Genuine gold fears not the blazing fire.英语译成汉语:You cannot judge a tree by its bark.看树不能只看皮,看人不能光看衣;a leap in the dark冒险行动,盲目行为;

rooted to the spot呆若木鸡;Smooth water runs deep.水静流深,人静心深;neither fish nor fowl非驴非马;shakethe dust off one’s feet拂袖而去。不难看出,如果能用相近的汉语直接表达英语习语的字面用意,就可以直接表达。如果英语习语的言外之意并未出现在原文中,那么译文中就要加一些语言来明确表述,使字面用意和言外之意互为观照,使交流顺畅达意。

英语习语与汉语习语反映出人们对事物的认知、推理的思维方式和语言表达习惯都有较大的差异。对于这种在语言形式上具有很大的差异,在意义上具有民族性和典故性,翻译时只有找出英汉习语表现出来的语用用意的共同点,就能准确传达原意。例如,the sword of Damocles译成“达摩克里斯之剑”或者“象达摩克里斯之剑那样的临头的危险”,对于不知典故的读者仍然莫名其妙,而译成“临头的危险”,既表达了其语用用意也使语言简洁明了。因此,译者不妨根据习语语用用意进行等值翻译。

例如汉语译成英语:江河日下go from bad to worse;旦夕祸福Fortune is fickle;开天窗说亮话To put all cards onthe table;挂羊头卖狗肉Cry wine and sell vinegar.英语译成汉语:Achilles’heel致命的弱点;as clear as crystal清如水晶;Everyday is not Sunday好花不常开,好景不常在;

Judas’kiss口蜜腹剑;As a man sows,so he shall reap.

善有善报,恶有恶报。

上述各例,都是参照语用用意进行的翻译。英语习语只出现字面用意,汉语译文中没有英语原文中的字面用意,而是直接反映了原文间接表达出来的言外之意。虽然英汉两种语言表达差异很大,但是翻译时根据其语用参照,处理好相通的所指意义,就能较好地表达原意。

三、结语

话语的表达总是不完备的,有多重意义蕴含其中。浓缩民族文化精随的习语,虽然由于各自的文化、环境等因素的影响,在语言形式、表达方式上存在差异。但是,译者通过对原文语用用意的“显性”与“隐性”的把握,通过认知弄清英汉语中的关联因素及其语用用意,运用相应的方法进行翻译,就能准确再现英语习语和汉语习语所表达出的语用用意,促进英汉民族的文化交流。
