又有一次，他在哭的时候，从手指缝里用一只眼睛偷偷看我们，是否同情他的眼泪。但是我们故意不理睬他：阿纳托利在看书，我在批改学生的作业。这可好了，舒拉就像什么事也没有发生一样，不声不响走到我身边，爬到我的腿上。我轻轻地拍了一下他的头，就把他放在地板上，自己仍继续工作，他也不再妨碍我了。通过这两件事把他给治好了：自从我们不顺从他以后，他就不再撒娇，哭闹了。
卓娅很爱舒拉。她经常装出大人的神气，庄重地用大人的话说：“不要娇惯孩子，让他哭一会儿吧，没事！”她说这话时的神情很惹人发笑。但是当她一个人陪着小弟弟的时候，她对他一向是很温柔的。如果他摔倒了，哭起来了，她就跑去拉他的手，尽力把这个小胖子抱起来。她用自己的衣襟给他擦眼泪，劝说着： “别哭了，你要做一个聪明的孩子。对啦，好孩子……你把这木块拿着。来，让咱们修一条铁路，你愿意吗？……这是画报，我给你看图画好吗？你来看看……” 最有趣的是：卓娅对自己不懂得的东西，总是坦白地承认自己不懂；而舒拉的自尊心特别强，“我不知道”这句话，是很难从他口里说出来的。为 r避免承认自己不懂得某一件事情，他会想出各种狡猾的办法。我还记得，有一次阿纳托利买J，一本儿童读物，内容很丰富，里面带有很多十分生动好看的图画：画着各种各样的动植物、物件和人。平时我们喜欢和孩子们一起翻阅这本书。有时候我指着图画问舒拉：“这是什么？”如果是他所认识的东西，他就会赢即高兴而骄傲地说出名称来，而遇到他不知道的东西时，就不是这样了，为了避免回答，什么鬼点子他都想得出来！ “这是什么呀？”我指着火车头问他。
舒拉叹了一口气，踌躇片刻，然后狡猾地笑笑，说道： “你自己说好啦！” “这是什么呀？” “小鸡儿。”他很快地回答。
“对啦。这个呢？” 画的是他不认识的奇怪的动物：骆驼。
阿纳托利·彼得洛维奇在桌子旁边坐着的时候，喜欢把卓娅放在自己的膝上。他向来习惯在吃午饭的时候读点什么，女儿头倚着他的肩膀很听话地坐着，从来不妨碍他。
她还是跟以前一样，个子长得很瘦小。长到11个月时，开始迈出第一步。她对人很亲热而且信任，周围的人们都喜欢她。有时她走到门外，对每一个路过的人都微笑。如果有谁对她说：“到我家里去玩玩好吗？”她真的高兴地伸出小手让新朋友带去。
满两周岁的时候，卓娅会清楚地说话了。她经常在“做客”回家以后说： “我到彼得洛夫娜家里去了。你认识彼得洛夫娜吗？她家里有格里亚，克沙尼业，米莎，萨尼亚和老爷爷。那儿有牛，还有小羊。它们在跳哪！” 卓娅还没到两周岁的时候，她的'弟弟舒拉就出生了。这个男孩出生时啼哭声音很大。他的嗓门很粗，一哭起来没完没了。他比卓娅胖得多，健壮得多。但是眼睛却跟她一样，很明亮，头发也是黑的。
舒拉出世以后，我们就经常对卓娅说：“你是姐姐”，“你是大孩子” 。吃饭的时候她和大人坐在一起，坐在一把高椅子上。她会照顾舒拉：要是橡胶奶嘴从他的嘴里掉下来了，她就给放回嘴里；如果他醒了，屋里刚好又没有别人，她会扶着他的摇篮摇着。那时候我也常常让卓娅帮我做些事情。
“卓娅，把尿布拿来。”我说，“把碗递给我。” 或者： “卓娅，帮我收拾收拾：把书收起来，把椅子放回原来的地方。” 她总是非常高兴地做这些事情，做完之后总是问：“还做什么呀？” 在她三周岁，舒拉一岁多的时候，她就会拉着舒拉的手，拿着奶瓶到奶奶那里取牛奶了。
记得有一次，我正在挤牛奶。舒拉在我身边玩。卓娅拿着碗站在对面等着鲜牛奶。牛蝇落在牛身上叮它；牛忍不住就挥动尾巴一扫，却打着了我。
卓娅马上把碗放下，一手抓着牛尾巴，一手拿着树枝赶牛蝇，嘴里说： “你为什么打妈妈？你不能打妈妈！”然后她看着我，一半是问，一半是肯定地说：“我来帮你！” 村里的人们一提到舒拉时就这样说：我们女教师的那个小子横看竖看一个样，倒在地下和站起来，都是一样高。
舒拉确实很胖也很结实。在一周岁半的时候，力气就比卓娅大得多。但是，这并不影响她照顾他，有时候甚至严厉地教训他。卓娅从开始说话发音就很清楚，从来没有咬过舌。而舒拉在三周岁时还不会发卷舌音。卓娅很在乎这件事。
“舒拉，你说：列舍托。”她要他跟着说。
“勒舍托。”舒拉重复说。
