在谈《集结号》之前，先讲一个苏联卫国战争中的真实战例。

而《集结号》讲述的，也是一个类似的故事。
1948年的一天，中原野战军某部9连得到命令，为掩护团主力转移，必须坚守汶河阵地，除非听到团部司号员吹起表示任务完成的集结号，否则决不准撤退，哪怕打到最后一个人。9连全体官兵面对数十倍于己的敌人，拼死打退了对方三次进攻，而集结号始终没有响起，最后除连长谷子地一人被震昏幸存外，其余47人全部阵亡，无一生还。
谷子地在后方医院康复后，发现全国解放军已经做了大整编，原来部队的番号不在了，他不得不花了数年功夫，总算找到了老部队，得知他的老战友、当时下命令的团长已在抗美援朝战争中牺牲，更让他吃惊的是，原来当年执行的，其实根本就是一项有去无回的.任务：为掩护团主力的行动，团长不得已做出牺牲他们连的决定，所谓撤退的集结号，只是一个安慰，根本就没打算、也没有吹响过……。由于9连47人全部阵亡，且战场在战后已改建了煤窑，所有阵亡战士的遗体都没有被找到，所以他们只能按失踪处理，不能获得革命的荣誉。在知道这一切后，深感委屈的谷子地下决心要为牺牲的弟兄们讨回公道……
《集结号》反映的，是中华民族内战这个大悲剧下几个小人物的悲剧，总体感觉悲壮感人。在宣传时，影片号称战争场面达到了《雷霆救兵》的水平，实际看下来是夸张了点，但和韩国影片《太极旗飘扬》比，已可以等量齐观。无论是化妆、音效还是战场表现效果，确实达到了近年来国产片的最高水平，远远超过了《冲出亚马逊》之类的片子。
《集结号》的剧本写的不错。国内近年来的一些“极品垃圾”，例如《无极》、《夜宴》和《黄金甲》，其实无论演员的表现还是声光效果都达到了相当水准，之所以被称为烂片，关键是剧本写的太差，“不会讲故事”，情节不是老套就是让人觉得莫名其妙。而集结号全篇一气呵成，没有离奇生硬的感觉，作为战争片，让人觉得自然可信。
在情节上，没有出现国产片解放军传统的“高大全”的形象。为了全局的胜利，牺牲偏师在战争中是很常见的，尽管这对当事人来讲相当残忍：但借用影片对白，“战争哪有不死人的”？在国内主旋律影片中出现这种情节，据我的记忆还是第一次。此外，阵前杀俘、破碎的肢体、面对敌人优势武器的无可奈何……这些增强了影片的真实感。
而片子的缺点，主要在于一些细节。在战场火力、武器道具上，很多地方不严谨，解放战争的场景中出现了太多五十年代才出现的武器，火力表现之强烈也远远超出了当年的实际情况，不过这也是刺激观众视觉的一种手段：在这些方面，《集结号》较之《雷霆救兵》还是差的太远。
总体而言，个人认为，《集结号》是近年来最优秀的国产战争影片，是部男人气息很强的电影，值得一看。
