伊休若本来是想先坐船到南达科特的港口，再坐捕鲸船出海，可惜当他抵达港口时，捕鲸船早已出发，却因此遇到一位叫因泰吉的好伙伴。因泰吉是一位鱼叉手，因为遵从守护神的指示，就和伊休若一起搭乘下一班捕鲸船出发。
当他们到毕科特号捕鲸船上时，见到他们的船长，名叫亚贺布，原本慈祥的他，因为被一只叫摩毕．德克的大白鲸咬断了一条腿，从此性格大变，一心一意想杀鲸报仇，船长虽然外表看似冷酷，其实拥有一颗细密的心。

我读了《白鲸记》。冒险是从这篇故事的主人公——以实玛利走进“鲸鱼旅馆”的那一刻开始的，他来到了一艘名为“裴廓德号”的船只上，就这样，以实玛利成了船上一名小杂工。“裴廓德号”的船长——亚哈船长。它被白色幽灵----莫比迪克，那头白鲸咬掉了自己的一条腿而心中充满了仇恨，并发誓一定要报复白鲸，在确定了每个人都乐意为自己卖命后，开始了这危险的旅程。
和白鲸作对自然不是什么好事，他们最后还是输了，唯一幸免的以实玛利被别的船只救起。而白鲸被亚哈船长戳瞎了一只眼睛。
从头至尾，我一直都认为亚哈船长是一个疯狂的人，他们在追杀白鲸的中途，已经收获到了很多的鲸油，可以卖很多钱了，可是船长还是一意孤行，为了自己那个“杀死白鲸”的梦想断送了整条船上的人的性命，我要是他我就会放弃，不会在继续追捕白鲸了。虽然他是个疯狂的人，可是我为他追求梦想的执着所折服。

初次接触麦尔维尔的作品，让我感到一丝陌生感，看着书面上充满生机的封面，我心里又添了一份新鲜感。本书讲述了一段传奇的捕鲸故事，中间穿插介绍了关于鲸的资料。例如，鲸的历史，鲸的分类，更是将鲸从嘴到尾叶都做了详细的叙述，至于对如何捕鲸，如何割脂，如何提炼鲸油毫不吝惜地做了一番记述。待读完此书，我感觉自我都快成了半个捕鲸能手，想要出海捕鲸了。
打开此书，犹如走进了社会的大门，形形色色的人物走进了我的视线，首先当推冷漠、报负心重的亚哈船长了。他是个出色的捕鲸手，却因捕鲸失去了一条腿，现实的痛苦将他折磨成了一个偏执狂，最终带领全体船员走向死亡深海；其次令我印象深刻的便是标枪手魁魁格，他刚出场，是一个贩卖人头的生人番的身份，但生人番出身的他却有一颗善良、热情、乐于助人的心，使他多次不顾自身安危去拯救他人的生命。没想到凶蛮的外表下还隐藏着一双天使的翅膀。当然还有许多血肉丰满的人物：忠厚、朴实的大副斯巴达克，充满神秘色彩的妖教徒费达拉等。
读完此书，让我为这本具有传奇色彩的杯具感到愤懑，如果没有亚哈船长的偏执，如果不是他鬼迷心窍想要复仇，如果不是他向船员们灌输疯狂的报复信念，如果不是他一味地冷漠无情，那全体热情而善良的船员怎会葬身大海，他怎样会勒死在捕鲸索中？

主人公以实玛利和魁魁格在开头那令人捧腹的邂逅让我以为他俩还能在今后的捕鲸中风头倍出，而后面的章节有一半以上是介绍捕鲸方面的说明，而不仅仅是记叙，在这方面体现作者有相当丰富的捕鲸随行经验，并且查阅了很多关于鲸和捕鲸的资料，如果你对这个行业陌生或者感兴趣的话，看看这部名著将受益匪浅，因为经过故事，你会很自然的讲枯燥的说明文消化掉。而作者在后面就很少提到主人公和魁魁格的友谊了，也许捕鲸需要团队合作，并不是俩人就能搞定的事，魁魁格只是从主人公角度观察的最仔细和真实的捕鲸人吧！
魁魁格的那种野性又纯真的性格也许映射着白鲸的性格，同时魁魁格与主角的对话让我得知，魁魁格曾强烈的'向往礼貌，可是在了解到了那些＂礼貌＂后却失望，甚至感到被＂污染＂，而无法坦然的回去继承王位了。
刚开始我有个疑问，抹香鲸会吃人或咬断人腿吗？当我在继续读下去后，发现这只叫莫比—迪克的白鲸是特殊的抹香鲸，不仅仅因为它是白色，并且更重要的是它具有向人类的捕鲸船挑战的勇气，当然，在这本书中写道的抹香鲸都是以巨型乌贼为食的，尽管长着牙齿，却没写专门吃人，书中的白鲸莫比—迪克也不吃人，因为是报复人类，或者有意挑战人类而把捕鲸者咬死弄死，所以，也许白鲸就是一种象征敢于向人类挑战的勇士或者恶魔罢了。
作者生活的年代在1809—1894年间，那时还没有声纳方面的科学，所以，作者在描述鲸那缺乏视野的眼睛和几乎找不到的耳朵时，对于这般感官的鲸如何能环游大洋留下了一些疑问，他并没有胡乱猜测定性，所以，从这点我敢肯定，作者其他在介绍鲸的文章中必须是相当严谨的，不错，他甚至还能找出当时和前人对于鲸的描述所犯下的一些可笑错误。
至于最终的结局，我一般是不想在读后感中写上的，因为这相当于“剧透”，而我还期望有人因看到我这篇文章而对这部小说产生兴趣，我不明白那些编写“序”的家伙们是怎样想的，既想吊一下读者的胃口，却又大大咧咧的把结局丢出来了。
除了魁魁格，捕鲸船“斐廓德号”上还有很多饱满的人物形象，如骄横的亚哈、猖狂的标枪手塔斯蒂格、胆小的比普，以及厨司、木匠、铁匠等等，加上那些惹火朝天的工作场面，向你说明了捕鲸船上的生活并不是想你想象的那样如同监狱一般。
海上世界是我们这些在陆地上生活的人所不能想象的，那时的捕鲸能够说是除了战舰水手外最危险的职业了，要乘着小艇靠原始的冷兵器来对付重达几十吨的巨兽，而不像此刻，我记得看到过一组现代捕鲸船的照片——直接在大船上用炮射出鲸标，命中后启动起重机将鲸拖回船上的加工间，分解过程是自动的，鲸肉直接被包装成了罐头。可是，即使作者那个年代捕鲸的冷兵器使用的也是相当科学，可见当时人们的聪慧，并且我认为，那种用原始的武器挑战自然界险恶的东西时，才有吸引我们，带给我们惊险和刺激的故事。
