巴利安为了寻找救赎，跟随父亲前往耶路撒冷。

1177年在蒙吉萨（Montgisard），16岁的鲍德温四世率领几百名骑士和数千步兵击败了萨拉丁的三万士兵。
由于丧失了九成的军队（特别是马穆鲁克近卫军），萨拉丁撤退回国，最后只剩不到十分之一的战士返回埃及。
1179年，撒拉丁率军偷袭了在泉水谷的雷纳德和圣殿骑士团，鲍德温四世闻讯亲提大军前来交战。
双方对峙许久，最后双方缔结两年的休战协议。
政治上患麻疯病的鲍德温四世在雷蒙德和雷纳德两派之间调停，保持着王国的稳定。
然而他死后，宫廷开始内乱。
耶路撒冷王国在它初期连续多位有才能的君主统治下达到极盛后，终于开始走向衰落了。
1185年，鲍德温四世去世，由鲍德温四世的姐姐西比拉公主和她的第一任丈夫蒙费拉的威廉之子王鲍德温五世即位。
1186年幼王鲍德温五世夭亡，鲍德温五世之母西贝拉公主和他的第二任丈夫居伊在不等委员会裁决的情况下双双举行了加冕典礼。
国内的几位领主之间爆发了内战，萨拉丁趁机入侵。
1187年，在哈丁战役中，22000名王国大军被萨拉丁全歼，数月后，萨拉丁轻而易举地征服了几乎整个耶路撒冷王国，仅由第三次十字军将领蒙特福德伯爵康拉德守住了北部的提尔一地。
