（一）一般所说的叫红狐、赤狐和草狐尖嘴大耳，长身短腿，身后拖着一条长长的大尾巴，全身棕红色，耳背黑色，尾尖白色，尾巴基部有个小孔，能放出一种刺鼻的臭气。
狐狸生活在森林、草原、半沙漠、丘陵地带，居住于树洞或土穴中，傍晚出外觅食，到天亮才回家。
由于它的嗅觉和听觉极好，加上行动敏捷，所以能捕食各种老鼠、野兔、小鸟、鱼、蛙、蜥蜴、昆虫和蠕虫等，也食一些野果。
