关于爱情的西方唯美传说

本文试图通过对的产生背景及主要特征的探讨,达到对西方唯美主义的一个总体性把握。

西方唯美主义文艺思潮是19 世纪后半叶颓废主义大潮中的一个支流,唯美派是近代欧洲文艺思潮中有深远影响的艺术流派之一。
它的影响可谓地贯东西,时延今日。
唯美主义作为一种思潮有着悠久的历史。
早在古希腊“希腊化时期”卡利马科斯所创造的“亚历山大里亚诗体”和古罗马晚期文学的诗歌中,已初见端倪。
到了18 世纪,提出了审美活动的独立性和无厉害的观念,莱辛、歌德、等人对这一问题也进行了探讨。
至19 世纪,唯美思想才形成了明确的理论,其始作俑者是法国作家、诗人。
其“为艺术而艺术”的口号是包括唯美主义在内的一切颓废主义艺术流派的总纲领。
后来,美国作家、诗人爱伦坡在《诗的原理》一文中发表了类似的观点,认为一首诗完全是为诗而写诗的。
英国一系列作家。
艺术家、文艺理论家积极响应“为艺术而艺术”的主张,唯美主义美学运动遂在英国展开,并于五、六十年代和八、九十年代两次达到高潮。
其中,是唯美主义美学思想的有力、鼓吹者和实践者。
唯美主义文艺思潮的兴起是有其独特的社会、文化背景的。
在19 世纪,尤其是19 世纪中后期,西方文化传统开始出现了断层:基督教信仰动摇了,理性主义逐渐走向沦落;与此同时,社会形态迅速由农业社会向工业社会过度,商业精神也随之得以完全确立。
在这样的文化背景之下,人们不得不以一种新的视角、新的价值向度来重新审视人类自身以及各种文化形态,试图在处于动摇、崩溃之中的传统价值体系之外,重新建立起人类的精神家园。
它前期打出了“为艺术而艺术”的旗帜,把捍卫艺术的独立与自足作为自己的准则,表现出了对“纯艺术”的执著追求;后期又以人的主体性的确立和实现作为目标,提出了所谓人生艺术化的命题,表现出了对自我实现方式的积极探索。
因此,可以毫不夸张地说,唯美主义文艺思潮是一次对于建构新的文化价值体系的积极尝试。
它无论是在题材的开拓方面,还是在文学观念的建构方面,都具有一定的先导性,是西方现代派文学和西方现当代文学观念的源头之一。
唯美主义的旗帜是“为艺术而艺术”,这一核心理论贯穿于唯美主义所有文艺理论和艺术思想之中。
因此,我们要讨论唯美主义的理论特征这个问题就不容回避。
“为艺术而艺术”的最初的、也是最基本的内涵则是艺术独立,即艺术从劝世训诫的道·68 ·成都航空职业技术学院学报Journal of Chengdu AeronauticVocational & Technical College2006 年9 月第3 期(总第68 期)Vol. 21 No. 3 (Serial No. 65) 2006德说教追求中脱离出来,从金钱实利的功利追求中脱离出来,从认识世界获取科学知识的追求中脱离出来,而仅仅以其自身为目的,为其自身而存在。
这一观念,其源头可上溯到德国的康德美学,是唯美主义者把艺术划归为康德所说的纯粹美的领域的结果。
康德认为,审美判断是对象的形式所引起的一种自由的愉快,它既不涉及事物的内容与概念,也不涉及欲念和利害计较,所以它不同于逻辑判断,不是一种认识活动,也不同于功利的以及道德的活动,不是一种实践行为,它仅仅存在于人对于事物的形式的感觉之中。
因此,美不是真,也不同于善,它仅仅是形式、是人的感觉印象。
唯美主义文艺运动兴起以后,许多作家、艺术家、批评家相继把艺术划归为美的领域,并在此基础上,从艺术不同于科学认识,艺术不同于功利与道德训诫,艺术的价值重在形式、重在用语言再现感官的印象三个方面进行了艺术独立的理论体系建构与艺术创作实践,从而形成了一场影响深远、绵延长达半个多世纪的艺术独立运动。
首先,艺术不同于功利与道德训诫。
唯美主义文艺运动最初是由反对社会艺术的道德功利要求而揭开序幕的。
“因为旧式的说教风尚要求文学寓教于乐;大革命以来官方和非官方都有人纷纷争取由政府来控制和指导文学,新型的自由主义者或社会主义者又主张艺术为人类进步或乌托邦”(雷纳·韦勒克著,杨自伍译《近代文学批评史》,上海译文出版社,1997 年版) ,道德功利的要求成了艺术独立的最大障碍,当然也成了其首选的攻克目标。
对于这一问题,又可以进一步分解为两个不同的视角:从作者创作的角度着眼;从作品内容以及作品的社会效果着眼。
就第一方面来讲,唯美主义者们的观点较为一致,态度也相当坚决。
艺术创作必须远离于社会实践之外,它有自身的道德,这种道德发源于对美、对艺术本身的挚爱,这似乎成了唯美主义者们的共同倾向。
爱伦·坡毫不客气地把每一首诗都应该顽强地给予一条教训,并且就按这教训来评定作品价值的观点斥之为“教训诗的异端”。
王尔德干脆把艺术家在创作中道德上的好恶嘲讽为“不可原谅的矫揉造作”。
和前两人相比,波德莱尔的论述则显得更为深刻。
他说:“诗除了自身外并无其它目的,它不可能有其它目的,除了纯粹为写诗的快乐而写的诗之外,没有任何诗是伟大、高贵、真正无愧于诗这个名称的。
”诗人倘若想事先担负一种道德目的,这就会大大地减弱诗作的力量。
“诗是自足的”,它无需求助于外界,不必将外在的道德作为自己追求的目的。
就第二方面来讲,情况复杂一些。
有的人比如戈蒂耶等,完全否定艺术中的道德因素,进而完全否定艺术在社会中的功利、道德价值;有的人则有矛盾之处,比如王尔德就是这样。
然而大部分唯美主义者则并不否认艺术中的道德因素和艺术在社会中的道德教育作用。
波德莱尔就说:“请听明白,我不是说诗不淳化风俗,也不是说它最终的结果不是将人提高到庸俗的厉害之上;如果是这样的话,那显然是荒谬的。
我是说如果诗人追求一种道德目的,他就减弱了诗的力量;说他的作品拙劣,亦不冒昧。
诗不能等同科学和道德,否则诗就会衰退和死亡;它不以真实为对象,它只以自身为目的。
”这表明,波德莱尔并不反对诗所产生或具有的道德的作用和功利的效果,他反对的是为了说教的目的而写诗。
从创作的角度强调“为艺术而艺术”,从作品内容及社会效果的角度又并不否认其道德的因素和道德的价值,这可以说既体现了唯美主义者们的辨证观,也暗含了他们的惶惑与矛盾:一方面追求所谓的纯美、纯艺术,另一方面又不敢彻底地屏弃论理学和艺术的社会功利方面的全部职能。
其次,艺术不同于科学知识。
唯美主义者要求艺术从认识世界获取科学知识的重负下解放出来的呼声,是直接针对批判现实主义、自然主义以及刚刚兴起的摄影艺术而发的,因而具有着极强的反现实主义色彩。
他们首先是把艺术与科学区别开来,然后在此基础上,便开始了对现实主义、自然主义所谓艺术再现社会、模仿生活之说以及艺术实践的批驳。
唯美主义者把艺术与科学区别开来,依据的是康德所谓人的心理功能的知、情、意三分之说。
他们认为,用诗句来叙述知识,就等于是描写“整个落在科学的望远镜和圆规下面的东西,就是自贬于科学的责任并侵犯其职能”;并且还会因关注知识而忽视形式,结果导致诗的毁灭,所以必须加以反对。
另外,他们还认识到了诗与知识在表达及对人所造成的印象方面的区别。
顺着艺术与科学认识有别的思路,唯美主义者们进而展开了对于艺术再现社会、模仿生活之说的·69 ·论唯美主义的产生背景及其特征批驳。
波德莱尔把“摹写自然”的主张斥之为“艺术的敌人”。
王尔德把《哈姆莱特》中的“艺术反映自然”的著名台词称之为“不幸的格言”,认为完全是由于哈姆莱特故装精神失常所致。
他批评现代的英国情节剧以模仿的手段来代替创作手段的做法,说他们让人感到“多么乏味呀!”总而言之,在王尔德看来“, 作为一种方法,现实主义是一种完全的失败”,如果不想办法制止或至少改变人们的这种对于事实的荒唐崇拜“, 艺术就会变得毫无生气,终将从大地上消失。
”唯美主义者对于艺术模仿、再现社会人生的现实主义创作方法的这种排斥态度,必然会导向在艺术创作中对于想象力的强调与推崇。
戈蒂耶把想象力称为世界上最稳固的财富,认为“人们依附于梦并在梦中自我遗忘”。
爱伦·坡声称想象力会将人引向“伟大奥秘的边际”。
波德莱尔确信“唯有想象力才有诗”,并主张“由于想象力创造了世界,所以它统治这个世界”。
王尔德则坚持唯有想象力才是开启美的艺术的钥匙。
因此,在唯美主义的理论体系中,想象力一方面可以创造出一个完全不同于现实世界的幻想天地来弥补因拒绝模仿而造成的空白,另一方面它仅仅浮于事物的表面,可以完全满足于唯美主义者对于形体的喜好。
最后,艺术的价值重在形式。
劝世训诫、金钱实利的追求,认识世界获取知识的追求,都不在艺术的职能范围之内,艺术即是它自身,它的目的就在于追求自身的完美。
这是主张艺术自主论者们的共同信条。
但是“艺术自身”所指的具体内涵是什么呢? 他们的回答是:形式,一种与内容相脱离的纯粹的形式。
在《英国的文艺复兴》一文中,王尔德这样写道:“不要在油画中寻找主题,而只求它有绘画的魁力、色彩的美妙和构图的完美”。
“诗歌也是如此,诗的真正特质,诗的快感,决不来自主题,而是来自对韵文的独创性运用,来自济慈所说的诗句的感性生命。
”这也就是说,艺术的魅力纯粹源于它的形式。
因此,翻开唯美主义的文献,对于形式在艺术中重要价值的强调俯拾皆是,我们认为大致可以分为这样两种成分:语言文字的乐感和用语言文字再现的感官印象。
戈蒂耶对为什么作诗的回答是:“如果韵脚还不坏的话,就一句一句的押下去,如此而己”。
并坚持认为词句、音韵和节奏这些才是诗的构成因素。
爱伦·坡把诗歌界说为“美的有韵律的创造”,认为格律、节奏和韵律等种种音乐成分,是诗中的“重大契机”,谁要是拒绝了它,便是不明智的,甚至是愚蠢的。
王尔德是一个整理者和发展者,因而也多有论述。
他标举语言的声音价值,对诗韵的魅力赞美备至。
他说,诗韵在真正的艺术家手里,不仅仅是一种诗律之美,它还是思想感情的一种精神性意象。
