You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says Jobs
This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him? They said: Of course. My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college. And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting. It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.My second story is about love and loss.
I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle. My third story is about death.Thank you all very much.

The GoddessWho is the Goddess? The Goddess is the Mother Earth and the Creatress of the Universe. She is the moon and the cycles of life, as all woman have a cycle in which is the bringer of life. She is the light, the darkness, and everything in between. She is the mountians, the oceans, and the stars in the sky. The Goddess is a triune being, meaning she has three forms. These forms are known as the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. As the Maiden she is the waxing moon. Other names for her are the Virgin or the Huntress. She is spring, the time of fresh beginnings for all living things. She is the repeating cycles of birth and rebirth, both of the spirit and of the body. The Maiden is the dawn, eternal youth, enchantment, and seduction. Her color is traditionally white, which represents innocence or newness. As the Mother she is the full moon. Other names for her are the Great Teacher or the Creatress. She is summer, the time of ripening of all living things. She is re-creation of life and the creation of universal bodies. She is the high point, or peak, of all cycles. The Mother is the day, lustiness, adulthood\\\/motherhood, and reproduction. Her color is traditionally red, which represents blood or the life force. And as the Crone she is the waning moon. Other names for her are the Terrible Mother, the Hag, the Dark Mother, or the Wise One. She is Winter, the time of death or the end of all cycles. She is the darkness, where all life rests before rebirth. The Crone is the night, the abyss, menopause, advancement of age, wisdom, the gateway to death, and reincarnation. Her colors are black and dark blue, which represents darkness or the absorber of all light. The Charge of the GoddessListen to the words of the Great Mother ; She who of old was also called among men Artemis , Astrate , Athene , Dione , Melusine , Aphrodite , Cerriden , Dana , Arianrod , Isis , Brid and by many other names : Whenever ye have need of anything , once in the month , and better it be when the moon is full , then shall ye assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of me , who am Queen of all witches . There shall ye assemble , ye who are fain to learn all sorcery , yet have not won it's deepest secrets ; to these will I teach things that are yet unknown . An ye shall be free from slavery ; and as a sign that ye really be free , ye shall be naked in your rites ; and ye shall dance , sing , feast , make music and love , all in my praise . For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit , and mine also is joy on earth ; for my law is love unto all beings . Keep pure your highest ideal ; strive ever towards it ; let naught stop you or turn you aside . For mine is the secret door which opens upon the land of youth and mine is the cup of wine of life , and the cauldron of Cerridwen , which is the Holy Grail of immortality . I am the gracious Goddess , who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man . Upon earth , I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal ; and beyond death , I give peace and freedom , and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand sacrifice ; for behold , I am the mother of all living , and my love is poured out upon the earth . The Charge of the Star Goddess Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess ; she in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven , and whose body encircles the universe. I who am the beauty of the green earth , and the white moon among the stars , and the mystery of the waters , and the desire of the heart of man , call unto thy soul . Arise and come unto me . For I am the soul of nature , who gives life to the universe . From me all things preceed , and unto me all things must return ; and before my face , beloved of gods and of all men , let thine innermost divine self be enfolded in the rapture of the infinite. Let my worship be within the heart that rejoiceth ; for behold , all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals . And therefore let there be beauty and strength , power and compassion , honour and humility , mirth and reverence within you . And thou knowest the mystery ; that if that which thou seekest thou finest not within thee , then thou wilt never find it without thee . For behold , I have been with thee from the beginning ; and I am that which is attained at the end of desire. Charge Of The Dark GoddessWisdom and empowerment are the gifts of the Dark Goddess of Transformation She is known to us as Kali, Hecate, Cerridwen, Lilith, Persephone, Fata, Morgana Ereshkigal, Arianhrod, Durga, Inanna, Tiamat, and by a million, million other names.Hear me child, and know Me for who I am. I have been with you since you were born, and I will stay with you until you return to Me at the final dusk. I am the passionate and seductive lover who inspires the poet to dream. I am the One who calls to you at the end of your journey. After the day is done, My children find their blessed rest in my embrace. I am the womb from which all things are born. I am the shadowy, still tomb; all things must come to Me and bare their breasts to die and be reborn to the Whole. I am the Sorceress that will not be ruled, the Weaver of Time, the Teacher of Mysteries I snip the threads that bring children home to me. I slit the throats of the cruel and drink the blood of the heartless. Swallow your fear and come to me, and you will discover true beauty, strength and courage. I am the fury which rips the flesh from injustice. I am the glowing forge that transforms your inner demons into tools of power. Open yourself to my embrace and overcome. I am the glinting sword that protects you from harm. I am the crucible in which all the aspects of yourself merge together in a rainbow of union I am the velvet depths of the night sky, and swirling mists of midnight, shrouded in mystery. I am the chrysalis in which you face that which terrifies you and from which you will blossom forth, vibrant and renewed. Seek me at the crossroads, and you shall be transformed for once you look upon my face, there is no return. I am the fire that kisses the shackles away I am the cauldron in which all opposites grow to know one another in Truth. I am the web which connects all things I am the Healer of all wounds, the Warrior who rights all wrongs in their Time. I make the weak strong. I make the arrogant humble. I raise up the oppressed and empower the disenfranchised I am Justice tempered with Mercy. Most importantly child, I am you. I am part of you, and I am within you. Seek me within and without, and you will be strong. Know me. Venture into the dark so that you many awaken to Balance, Illumination, and Wholeness. Take my Love with you everywhere and find the Power within to be who you wish.

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for this opportunity to stand here. Today, I want to talk about a motivational and film: sea of the pianist (1900) legend. In 1900, the first day in New York just docked at the cruise virgin, add coal worker Danny Boodman picked up by a passenger abandoned baby, he named the baby to commemorate this child, 19 in the new century is the first day of his adoption. Until the age of 8, 1900 Boodman Danny died, and began to contact in music, 21 days to play the piano miracle. A few years later, adult 1900 became virgin, Virginia, the band pianist in a storm, he bumped into a are seasick Max, two very the same wavelength. Since then, his lifelong friends Max. 19 a true pianist, although he has never had a reputation, but one of the ship. The father of jazz to accept your challenge and Jelly Morto triumphed over him, 1900, but he still refused to disembark on land of positiveness in 1900, because men yearn for life is too far away. Until he met a girl of love at first sight, to love, to seek 1900, finally on the girl. That day he went off, but when he is on the land, he stared at the large city, at the moment, then return, return the boat. He said the Max, I won't get out. Indeed, all his life, no ship under 19. Until after many years, war, 1900, along with the old virgin Virginia together, in the vast sea bomb shattered. 1900, he let me see without worldly, relaxed, natural, elegant.
Ladies and Gentlemen: thank you all for giving me this chance. Today, I want to discuss an example of movies which may encourage us to become a better person. The movie I bring to you is: the legend of 1900.
It was first day of the year1900. Aboard the vessel Virginia in New York, Danny Boodman, worker on the ship, came by an abandoned baby. The baby was named 1900 in remembrance of his being adopted on the first day of the century. Not until the age of eight, when Danny Boodman was by that time dead, did1900 start to come in contact with music. Miraculously, he achieved the deed of learning to play the piano in 21 days.
A few years later, when 1900 had reached adulthood, he became the pianist of the orchestra on the Virginia. He met the seasick Max on a particularly rough voyage through a fierce windstorm. Incidentally, they were agreeable every aspect and became bosom friends. After some time, 1900 became a true pianist. Notwithstanding the fact that he had never once set his foot off the vessel, he had become famous.
Accepting Jelly Roll Morto’s challenge, he defeated the foremost jazz musician. Thus done, fame had reached a height never before mounted. Yet not once did he venture to go on land. To 1900, the life of everyday people is too far fetched for him.
Not until he had met the girl whom he fell in love with at first glance did he finally overcame his self esteem and took a step nearer to know what he himself never knew. On the planks of the ship he observed the elephantine city of New York. It took away his courage and he turned his back on the city, saying to Max: I shall never go off this ship.
And he kept his words. In the whole span of his lifetime, he never once left the comforts of the ship. Many years later when the war was at its end, his life ended on the bombed and sinking Virginia.
1900 had shown me what life is without the lures of wealth and fame, natural, simple, yet something which as unlikely as the existence of such a person. He knows nothing beside his music and his absolute absorbency in it.
Undoubtedly, he is a genius; he chose his own imaginary world to live in than the world of humans. “I would rather give up my life than to live in a never-ending world. I gave up on the journey to land, not because I see, but because I could not observe……” At least, he chose his own way of the world. Beautiful and free was the music he played from over the 88 keys of the piano. It was music that filled his pure and simple life. Aren’t we, living in a different world from 1900, a world filled with pressure and pain, living for somebody else? There are some things that we have ample power to reach but did not treasure their value. Therefore we have missed a lot of the beauty life offers.
After looking at this film, we should think more of ourselves. We waste away our life in this world full of money and greed. Ask yourself, deep down in your heart, what we live for, how we live our lives and the reason of our being alive. It shows us: we could live without a god, but we must have a belief.
The part when 1900 was challenged by Jelly Roll Morto is the best of the film is agreed without quarrel. The climax is when 1900 played his last piece: enduring movement, a piece which is played solely on the black keys, (in other words half-notes), and require the best of skills in piano playing. Tim Roth, being a professional actor, does not posses the ability of playing the piano so well. It is down to technology to enhance the effects of the last part of the challenge. Next, lets listen to this enduring movement, by 1900. thanks.
