在现阶段，广播新闻播音用多快的语速在播音界还是一个有争议的问题，有人主张快一点好，另一些人觉得慢一点好，但有一点可以肯定，即每分钟220字以下这样的慢语速已逐渐被广播界淘汰了。
这主要是由于两个原因：一是慢语速适应不了人们对信息量越来越大的需求，它在单位时间里对信息量的削减作用是显而易见的。
比如按每分钟播音200字计算，则在20分钟新闻节目里，这个语速要比每分钟播音250字少播1000字。
按每篇稿件200字计算，则少播5篇稿件。
二是它不适合生活在快节奏里的现代人的口味。
慢语速一般容易给人造成懈怠、拖沓的感觉。
如果播音员的精神状态不好，则很容易使人觉得无精打采，甚至有气无力。
可以说，广播新闻的播音速度是和逐渐加快的社会生活的节奏同步的，快速是时代发展对广播新闻播音的客观要求。
以中央台最具影响力的《新闻和报纸摘要》节目为例，60年代，每分钟播出约185个字；80年代，200—220字；90年代240—260字；近几年，每分钟250—270字，最快时达到每分钟300多字。
那么，是不是播音速度越快越好呢
答案是否定。
语言作为一种交流工具，说的和听的速度都有一个极限。
说话的速度太快，“耳朵”就会跟不上“嘴巴”，听的人领会理解就会发生困难。
而且语速太快，就会给人造成压力，使人紧张，从而也影响人们的理解。
比如有一位听众在给中央台的信中反映：“《新闻和报纸摘要》节目的播音员在播报新闻时，播音速度快得惊人，像雷声滚过，我听了简直喘不气来。
”快到使人“喘不过气来”的程度，当然就影响人们对信息的接收与领会。
另一方面，播音作为一门语言艺术，它与我们普通说话不同，它讲究语言规范、吐字清晰、语音准确。
每一个汉字的发音过程都由“字头、字腹、字尾”组成。
为了吐字清晰语音准确，每个字或词的发音都应该按一定的规律发全，调值也要到位。
如果一味的加快语速，势必压缩发音过程和时间，这一方面会造成语言的异义，一方面会让听众觉得声音急促，发音不全，以致难以辨析。
那么，什么样的语速是广播新闻适宜的播音语速呢
北师大语音专家周同春教授的研究表明，对于日常生活中非常熟悉的语言，在短时间内（几秒钟内），人耳的接受程度可达每秒七八个字，甚至更多；一般情况下，人耳的接受程度，即辨析率是每秒四五个字，即每分钟240—250字。
超过这个速度一定程度，听者理解辨析就会有一定困难。
而且不同年龄、不同文化程度、不同职业的人对语言理解的能力是不同的。
老年人听力差、反应速度慢、记忆力减退，他们的听觉和识辨能力往往不及年轻人，文化水平低的人对语言的理解能力一般也赶不上文化水平高的人。
所以我们在选择播音语速时要兼顾大多数听众，不能一味求快。
但播音毕竟用的是标准普通话，人们对标准普通话的辨析率要高于每分钟240—250字，可以达到280字左右，如果按照兼顾大多数的原则，则选择每分钟250—260字的播音速度是比较适宜的。
