Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The title of my speech today is Crossing the Sea . An English poet by the name of Rudyard Kipling once wrote in this poem We and They :All the people like us are Weand everyone else is TheyWe live over the seaWhile They live over the wayWe eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knivesThey who gobble their rice off a leafAre horrified out of their lives.When these lines first caught my eyes, I was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? Today's society, of course, is an entirely different picture. Those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips. Indeed, just take China as example; Our modern life has been influenced by Western style of living in so many ways that it's no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at McDonald's and even rather elderly people dressed in Apple Jeans. However, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. What is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation's mentality. Just look around. How many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government? How many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? Ask anyone who participates in today's speech contest. Who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? And I'm quite certain that if Confucius had lived to see today's China, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved expression of their passion. It is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient Eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the Western culture. But it is not only in China that we find the incorporation of the two cultures. Take the United States as an example: During the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition from Japan, many American companies such as the Ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of Eastern culture. Take the Chinese acupuncture as another example: This traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the West and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any Westerner as incredible in the past! Ladies and Gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. We live in a particular era when countries, East and West, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. We live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.To cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. My dear fellow students, our command of the English language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into Western culture while retaining our own cultural identity. Therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world. It is my happiest dream that new generation of Chinese will not only grow up drinking Coca cola and watching Hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of. 不久以前，大学生还只是束手空坐，等待政府给他们分配工作;如今，又有多少大学生正在做充分准备，为争取任何工作机会而激烈角逐? 20年前年轻人还完全依靠父母为他们安排未来，今天又有多少年轻人在急切地寻求一种独立的生活?试问今天参加演讲比赛的诸位，谁不是带着志在一搏的心情来到这里?谁不是铁下心来赢得这场比赛以实现自我?如今年轻人毫无顾忌地宣泄情感当众亲吻，我确信，倘若孔子在世，他必被吓坏。
很明显，我们这些东方古老文明的后裔们早已生活在西方文化的强烈影响之下，然而出现这种异质文化合流的现象不止是在中国。
以美国为例，20世纪80年代，面对来自日本的强大竞争压力，许多美国公司如福特公司开始采用对手的集体合作管理方式，而这种方式正是东方文化核心之精华。
再以中华针灸为例，这种传统的医疗方法以及这种疗法的依据——即人体阴阳失调导致疾病最终得到西方社会的承认，而在过去，西方人还认为这是无稽之谈。
女士们，先生们，我们恰逢一个伟大的时代:全球经济一体化、信息革命使得世界各种文化联系比以往更加紧密;我们恰逢一个特殊的年代:无论是东方国家还是西方国家都意识到自身急需调整传统价值。
与此同时，我们正生活在发展的关键时刻:种族冲突，地区动荡正越来越威胁着整个人类的和平与幸福。
如何对待这一时代，拥抱更加灿烂的未来，我们需要学会在越来越小的世界大家庭中更加和睦地生活。

But one thing for us to remember when facing troubles is to smile. Don’t complain about that. Objectively SpeakingPeople in this world can be divided into two categories: those always working and those always making comments. The working ones never have time to idle away. Some may run a hotel, or do some business; some may open a factory or set up a school; others may be absorbed in scientific research, or devoted to military affairs or political issues. Right or wrong, successful or failed, they are always fully committed to their careers. Facing all kinds of risks(not because they neglect them, but mainly because they have the courage), and shouldering the responsibilities, they march forward, bravely and cautiously. They are risking their luck and their lives as well. They have neither time nor energy to comment on others. While attentively planning the future, they devote themselves wholly in hard work, leaving the embroidered stories and malicious gossips flying in the air. The commenting ones, however, usually work less, and even if they want to work sometimes, they simply are not capable enough. They are no better than anyone, but show admiration to nobody either. They blame either the heaven, or the earth, but never themselves. They dare not to take any risks, but they are also afraid of any hard work. They are gossip-mongers, making stories and spreading rumors, making you feel annoyed and upset. It’s not because that you have hurt them, or disturbed them, or hindered them, but because you are working. If only you are working, he is there commenting. Everything is hard at the beginning. You have just started a new cause, needing encouragement and support, yet he is there pouring a jar of cold water or blowing a gust of chilly wind, making you worried or perplexed. （只承认你的运气和侥幸）能人可能被求助，受到世人的关注，从而导致事后的品评，感谢的少，抱怨的多。
（你没有求人，但别人求你的事没办或没办好，都是你的错。
）能人也会遭遇挫折，（有人甚至三起三落）感受人心的冷暖，洞知世态的炎凉，帮扶的少，推墙的多。
富人也不轻松。
固然也有为富不仁者，但也不能说所有的富者都不仁。
他们还有经营能力和运作手段，并且常常要充满冒险地去把握先机。
但谁管这些
一群人吃饭或游乐，大家一定会认为要富者买单，而不是AA制。
如果你不买，那就是吝啬。
在亲朋好友的圈子里如果有富者，那就必须经常周济他人，否则就会被指责无情无义。
自古就有“杀富济贫”，不管富是怎么富，贫是怎么贫。
允许一部分人先富起来的政策，让人们的心态好多了。
但仇富观念的消除，还要漫长的历程。
能人、富人都是人，既不神圣，也非完人。
他们都有自身的毛病，也会犯各种错误。
但平心而论，还有一种错误是别人强加的，那就是众人的期望。
期望他们这样，期望他们那样，期望变成了失望，就成了他们的错。
对他们求全责备也好，对他们非份希求也好，其实都不应算作他们的错。
我主张鼓励做事的人，哪怕他们真的有错。
我奉劝说事的人，自己也努力去做些可做的事。
我希望人们能平心而论天下事，不要偏激，不要掺杂个人的恩怨，不要取舍于个人的得失。
我更希望做事的人，不要太在意别人一时怎么说、甚至怎么骂。

However, it is not only our health that we should embrace, though many of us do not realize that. The decrease in air quality, the climate change, medical waste, noise and water pollution, and even food poisoning has added to the list of growing concerns to our living environment. Human are not supernatural beings, thus these problems have affected pretty much every matter. We upgrade gadgets and make full use of newer technologies, but we pay for the consequences in turn. For instance, the advent of batteries and machinery has caused million tons of water become toxic and undrinkable, further aggravating the already serious condition of water shortage and poisoning in several countries. The over-production and over-use of transportation vehicles and electricity has contributed to the Global Warming and caused myriads of species to disappear from the face of the earth due to home-loss and temperature change. We have brought wonders to the world, but have also destroyed miracles of nature. We are concerned about our nutritional intake and exercise all the time, so why shouldn't we care about the conditions of our living planet as well? Time is ticking on. We shouldn't put off the whole save the environment affair any longer. Please, do what feels right in our hearts, even though it is only a tiny matter. We'd go fishing, walks, and other fun things for a kid. Every child has a good and great father, and so do I. My family was rather poor when I was in my childhood. We didn't have our own house and had to live in a shabby， small room rented from my father's factory. The room was so small that there was little space for people to walk. I didn't have my own bed and had to sleep with my parents. This is terrible both for my parents and me. But father made this all different!he works very hard on his own business, now we have our own 2 housese,surly,I have my own room.and he take our family so much happiness, richer and richer. When I was little, I did everything with my dad. You could always find me sitting on his knee or walking and doing everything with him. Every night he would read me a bed time story and make the voices of each character. I learnt a lot from my daddy. I learnt to never take things to seriously and to always smile. Like many other fathers, my dad and I also has generation gap. He is not good at or even can’t work the computer.
