1929年诺贝尔文学奖得主德国著名作家，1875年生於德国北部小镇吕贝克，父亲经商，家境小康，童年时光「幸福且受关注」。

十六岁那年父亲去世，一家人靠变卖父亲的公司生活，他对学校课业毫无兴趣，提早辍学进入火灾保险公司上班，工作之馀从事写作。

後来进入慕尼黑应用技术大学选修历史、文学等课程，当时的目标是成为记者，成年後继承父亲的遗产，成为一名自由作家。

剧中有个既可恨，又使人同情的人物，他叫夏洛克，是个犹太人，放高利贷的。
