读过了这本书，我有许多感触，令我感受最深的，还是。
在古代的历史教科书中把定为罗马帝国衰亡之年，因为在那一年，末代被赶下了宝座，不过罗马的灭亡是一个十分缓慢的过程，以至于很多罗马人未能察觉到。
他们一直在抱怨薪少、食品价高、生活的艰难。
不过总的说起来，在公元前4个世纪里，大多数罗马人依旧过正常的日子，他们照常吃喝、去剧院等，当然也有不幸的人被饿死，可他们也不知道自己生存的帝国注定灭亡的命运。
不过罗马帝国的根基已锈蚀，它仅是一个城邦，与古希腊的雅典并无差异，从政治上来说，它是不合格的，年轻人大多在战场上，那些不幸的农民，成为罗马帝国的附属品，终身无法离开。
不过，因为他们眼前的世界无非是一个悲惨的寄身之所，因此，他们宁愿打“美好的仗”也不愿为罗马帝国打仗，这样，一个又一个世纪过去，情况变得越来越糟，野蛮的民族开始侵略罗马，由于没有土生土长的罗马士兵可以抵御，最后皇帝被迫允许他们在罗马帝国居住，不过很快他们就怨气冲天，抗议贪婪的罗马税吏夺走他们的一切，当他们的呼声没有得到重视，他们便进军罗马，以便得到皇帝陛下的声音，于是康士坦丁皇帝开始寻找一个新住所，他选择了位于欧亚之间的通商门户拜占庭，并重命名为将皇宫迁到此处，康士坦丁死后，为便有效率地管理，他的2个儿子便将罗马帝国一分为二，哥哥通知西部，弟弟通知东部。

读过了这些文字，我深思到，原本繁荣的罗马帝国为何最终沦落至如此地步
是因为它早期的穷兵黩武吗
不是的，仅仅是因为这堕落二字，正是因为开始的繁荣与稳定的生活，才导致人们罪恶丛生，道德沦散，陷入堕落之中，在这漫长的过程中，他们又何尝知道自己已经慢慢走向堕落的深渊，自己一向认为繁荣，永不消失的罗马帝国沦入此下场呢
而我们是否也应唤醒自己，仔细地审视自己是否也在危险边缘，现在的我们需要的是知识与真理，只有勤奋学习，才能登上一个又一个台阶，也许只有这样也才无愧于自我和社会。
读过这本书，作者渊博的知识、幽默的笔风给我们留下了深刻的印象，房龙9岁时便开始了画画、与乐器，曾多次来到中国学习，就是这点点滴滴的努力才造就了房龙的今天，人们总是羡慕大红大紫的人，却不曾想到他们背后默默付出的努力，没努力，又何来成功呢
再回想我们，每个人都可以问心无愧地说我尽了最大的努力吗
难道考试成绩好的同学都是由于他们好运吗
他们得到的是他们的努力换来的成熟的果实。

The book is a little difficult to read at first. Personally, it takes me a little while to get used to the 19th century dialect in the book.
