The Day After Tomorrow, while drenched with some of the richest specialeffects seen since The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and Star Wars, isrich in both character depth and plot quality. It is easy to be awed bythe movie magic but one must be careful not to overlook the importantmessage imbued within the movie. The political importance of theconcern with global warning is an undertone throughout the entire film(in some scenes it is more prevalent) but it does not take away fromthe grand scope of The Day After Tomorrow. Not since Stephen King's,The Stand has a movie of global disaster done the genre justice.Movies such as Deep Impact and Armageddon fall far short in theirattempts to lure the audience in with the promise of a cataclysmicevent, only to find that the heroes come through in the eleventh hourto save the world from dire calamity! In The Day After Tomorrow, theheroes do not save the day for everyone in the world, or, morespecifically, in the Northern Hemisphere.
