《等候高蒂》（Waiting for Goldie）是《典范英语 9》中的第一本，寥寥人物，情节简单，主要描述了丹尼替生病的爷爷照顾鸽子等候赛鸽（Goldie）归来的故事。
丹尼的爷爷爱好养鸽子，其中的一只长着金黄色的眼睛（golden eyes），这在鸽子中间是很罕见的，因此被取名Goldie。
丹尼的爷爷告诉丹尼判说断鸽子是否飞得快和判断一个人一样，只要观察他的眼睛就可以了（tell….by looking into his eyes）。
对这一点，我是深有共鸣的。
高中的好友在第一次见到我老公的时候，悄悄对我说：“看他的眼睛，就知道他是一个不好惹的人”。
后来的相处完全验证了她的话，从此我也养成了用观察眼睛来判断人的习惯，更加相信“眼睛是心灵的窗户”这句话了。
Goldie不负众望，成了训练有素的冠军赛鸽（champion pigeon），赢得很多奖杯（loads of cups）。
但是就在Goldie被放飞（release）参加比赛期间，丹尼的爷爷因心脏病（heart attack）发作而住院。
于是等待Goldie回家，照顾其他鸽子的责任（responsibility）就落在了丹尼的头上。
丹尼等待着鸽子回家，准备同特制的计时钟（special timing clock）计录（keep a record）Goldie完成比赛的时间。
但是，Goldie却没有像往常那样按时飞回来。
丹尼心急如焚，心乱如麻（His mind was totally mixed up），因为他不知道怎样向爷爷交代，于是他不想（try to get out of）去医院看望生病的爷爷。
不明原委的爸爸妈妈硬拉着他来到了医院。
刚开始，他不知怎么向爷爷交代，爸爸妈妈对他的沉默很是不满，问他为什么不说话（Has the cat got your tongue）? 为了不让爷爷担心，他只好向爷爷撒谎（lie）说Goldie已经回来，并随口报了个时间给爷爷听。
不知情的爷爷很是满意。
丹尼以为Goldie在飞回的路上被栖居在采石场的猎鹰吃掉了，他不能忍受想象（can’t bear to think about ）到Goldie被猎鹰吃点的情景，于是怒火中烧（His chest was burning）的他决定报复（revenge）。
他只身一人前往采石场想端掉(get out of)猎鹰的老窝（nest）。
猎鹰的巢穴坐落在远处采石场那边陡峭的山坡上，但复仇的欲望支撑着他，他穿越小树林，滑下山坡，然后朝着鸟巢的方向攀登。
爬到中途时，他脚下一滑踩空了（foot’s slipped），双手抓住岩石，身体悬在空中，一些岩石哗哗下落(go clattering down)。
最后摸索着找到了落脚的地方（foothold），像个海星（starfish）一样将身子紧紧贴在岩壁上（rock face）。
他一遍又一遍提醒自己要冷静，不要向下看（Calm down, don’t look down），没想到的是，就在他伸手倒掉鸟巢的时候，他发现了一只幼鹰，弱小而无助（small and helpless）。
他突然想起了Goldie小的时候，毛绒绒孤单无助的样子。
气愤的感觉像流水流进了排水孔一样荡然无存了（All my angry feelings gush away, like water down a plughole），复仇的心也一下子被抛到了九霄云外。
他没有伤害那只幼小而无助的猎鹰，继续超山顶爬去。
他忍不住犯了一个错误向下望了望，一阵晕眩（dizzy）笼罩了他，他赶紧用手扒住岩石缝隙（jam his hand into a gap in the rock）。
就在岩石缝里，他发现了受伤的Goldie。
他忘记了害怕（forgot about being scared），抓住（grab）Goldie，将他揣在怀里（stuff…into），拖着身子费力(haul …up)地超山顶爬去。
在丹尼的精心照料下，Goldie的伤治愈了，爷爷也痊愈回家了。
是丹尼的勇敢、包容和细心挽救了Goldie。
丹尼的爷爷脾气不好，但从不在他的鸽子和孙子面前发火，原来，爱是可以改变一个人的性格的。
