市位于四川盆地北缘陵江中游，已有2300多年的历史。
历代封建帝王先后在这里设置怼西郡、保宁军、安德军、保宁路 、川北道和川北镇等治所，向为古代巴蜀军事重镇。
阆中土肥水美、气候适宜、物产丰富，早在5000多年前的石器时代人类就在此生活、聚集。
阆中汉为巴郡，隋时因避文帝父讳改称阆内县，宋以后称阆中，历代多为州、郡、府治所，清兵初入川时曾为四川首府。
古城阆中的建筑风格体现了我国古代的居住风水观，由于地理环境的封闭性，古城风貌得到了天然保护，城中街名多有其特殊含义，如状元街、学道街、管星街、三陈街、醋房街等等，每条街都有一段历史。
会馆、庙宇、民居等古建筑保存较好，现存唐代观星台遗址、张飞庙、桓侯祠、巴巴寺、观音寺、白塔等，城东大佛山有唐代摩崖大佛及石刻题记。
嘉陵江沿岸为四川省级风景名胜区阆中江南，景区总面积37平方公里，呈带状分布于约26公里长的江边，由古城区、锦屏区、白塔区、滕王阁、张飞庙、华光楼、锦屏山、金银台、灵山寺、观星楼、大佛山等组成。
其中嘉陵江南岸的锦屏风景名胜最为著名，山势如屏，遍山似锦，号称“嘉陵第一山”。
景区的旅游资源也很丰富。
阆中城以其悠久的历史文化，被列入中国历史文化名城，远近闻名。
曾是川陕革命根据地的大巴山山区一带，留下了近代中国革命许许多多的遗址遗迹。
全区被列为国家、省级重点文物保护单位的有30多处。
米仓山东段、大巴山区优美的自然风景光彩夺目，如南江光雾山景区的喀斯特地貌景观秀丽多彩，通江诺水河景区山青水秀、洞穴成群，钟乳石景观造型精美、玲珑剔透。
区内已建立了达县真佛山、通江诺水河、南江光雾山、宣汉百里峡等以自然风景为主的省级风景名胜区，还有巴中南龛坡-阳灵山、蓬溪赤城湖、遂宁广德-灵泉、开江宝石湖、达县明月江等市(县)级风景名胜旅游区，以及营山太蓬山、南充西山和升钟水库等旅游点；开辟了达县铁山和西山、南充金城山、大竹五峰山等省级森林公园。
历史文化遗迹：有渠县冯焕阙、沈府君阙、赵家坪和蒲家湾无铭阙，渠县王万邦墓城坝遗址，开江县陶牌坊，阆中桓侯庙和华光楼、川北道贡院、五龙庙，蓬溪单筒小井，达县龙爪塔，南充奎阁、紫云坪植茗灵园记岩刻，达县真佛山庙群，蓬安云山故城等多种历史名胜景观。
