一、“作客”“做客”两重天解释“作客”——“动寄居在别处：～他乡”；“做客”——“动访问别人，自己当客人：到亲戚家～”。
可见，同样是“客”，但“作客”与“做客”享受的待遇不同，内心感受也不一样。
“作客”或四处漂泊，或寄人篱下，“独在异乡为异客”，那感觉真可谓“冷冷清清，凄凄惨惨切切”了。
而“做客”无论是应邀光临还是主动拜访，一般都会受到款待和礼遇，宾主在良好的氛围中相处，“做客”者是不太会产生内心的失落感的。
可见，“作客”与“做客”，一个在地下，一个在天上，两者不能混为一谈。
杜甫：“万里悲秋常作客，百年多病独登台。
”敦煌曲子词三首之三：“作客在江西，得病卧毫厘。
还往观消息，看看似别离。
”两例中“作客”都指寓居异地，“作客”也都不能写作“做客”的。
二、然而，“作”“做”本是同根生从文字史上看，“作”先出，“做”后起。
明代字书认为：“做，俗‘作’字。
”王力先生则认为“做”是“作”的分化字，即“做”分担了“作”的部分职能。
如今，在表示支配具体事物的行动时，确实应用“做”而不用“作”，如“做一个凳子”“做一件衣服”等。
但是，在“充当、当成”这一义项上，两者并没有明显的区分界限。
就拿举例，就既有“作保”(当保人)，又有“做媒”(当媒人)，既有“作陪”(当陪客)，又有“做东”(当东道主)，等等。
三、词典荐“作客”明确区分“作客”和“做客”，但同是出版的却不收“做客”只收“作客”，释义为“旅居在外或到亲友家拜访”。
这显然是将“做客”合并进了“作客”。
而则明确“作客”与“做客”是一组局部异形词。
【作客】①动到亲友家拜访△到朋友家作客。
②动寄居异地△异乡作客多年。
【做客】见“作客”①。
现在一般写作“作客”。
三种处理方法，说得最清楚：“到亲友家拜访”用“作客”和“做客”都行，推荐使用“作客”；寄居他乡则用“作客”不用“做客”，“万里悲秋常作客”不能写成“万里悲秋常做客”。
若按的归纳，会让一些经典作家作品非常尴尬。
如巴金：“小说家水上先生也是我的一位老友，十六年前我和冰心大姐曾到他府上作客。
” 《“长官意志”》：“最近有几位法国汉学家到我家里作客，闲谈起来。
”又《关于丽尼同志》：“1947年我去台湾旅行曾到台北他们家作客，当时烈文在台湾大学教书。
”沈从文《一个妇人的日记》：“宋嫂子说：‘听说是回娘家做客去了，我怕呢不会回来的，你婆婆还留我做伴。
’”又《绅士的太太》：“有时顶小的少爷，一定得跟到母亲做客，总得太太装作生气的样子骂人，于时姨娘才能把少爷抱走，”但沈从文也用“作客”表示“当客人”，如《凤子》：“不到一会，墙外那一个，便被主人请进花园里了。
第一次作客，就是从那一道围墙跳进去的……”知侠《铁道游击队》：“有时披着汉奸皮的伪人员，也趾高气扬的坐下作客。
”总之，“作客”与“做客”是局部异形词。
“作客他乡”不能写作“做客他乡”，但“去亲戚家作客”和“去亲戚家做客”都可以。
在表示“到亲友家去拜访”时，“作客”与“做客”是异形词。
