A Tale of Two Cities was written by Charles Dickens, who was born in Portsmouth, England in 1812. As the second of eight children, Dickens had to go to work at the age of twelve to support his poor family, and he lived a difficult childhood. This troublesome time scarred him deeply and provided him with substantial material for such stories as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations. Though just accepted only little education, Dickens became a famous writer through his struggling self-learning and extremely hard work, and he was the representative writer of realism in the 19th century.

Charles Dickens lived in the period of transition between feudalism and capitalism, when the industrial revolution originated in England swept through Europe. As large numbers of workers invaded into urban centers to earn a living, the bourgeois took advantages of the surplus of labor by keeping wages low. The poor thus remained poor, and often lived in a narrow and filthy environment. Dickens’ writing depicted various directions about this society, and provided a keen, sympathetic chronicle of the plight of the urban poor.

A Tale of Two Cities mainly about the great atrocities of French aristocrats compelled the poor citizens to resist violently. Doctor Manette spent eighteen years as a prisoner in Bastille because he intended to expose the atrocity after learning that.

Mr. and Mrs.Defarge were the revolutionaries in the poor Saint Antoine section of Paris. They wanted to kill all French aristocrats, including Charles Darnay. Mr.Defarge used to be Doctor Manette’s servant, so he was kind to Manettes, while his wife’s heart burned with longing for revenge. At last, Charles Darnay was judged to death, But Sydney Carton, a lawyer who loved Lucie deeply, willing to die instead of Darnay, as they had similar appearance.

From my personal point of view, the person A Tale of Two Cities described astounded me very much. Some of them were cruel, crazy and reasonless, while some of them were kind, moral and had own mind.

Sydney Carton was the person I thought the most. He was a smart attorney, without his help, Mr. Stryver could not solve any cases. But he was lazy, alcoholic, and cared nothing and nobody, he even could not find any interests in his own life, it seems that he lived just for wasting life. But he loved Lucie deeply. Finally, he

became a hero, because he sacrificed his life to save Darnay. I didn’t know why the author spent so many words to form such a strange guy at frist, he used his life to love Lucie, after all. But now, I caught it. Perhaps the terrible Carton symbolized the terrible old France, and his change in the end shown that everything could change, including the old France, a new and fine society would replace the violence.

Then, Charles Darnay. He was worthy of esteem or respect. He displayed great virtue in his rejection of his uncle, Marquis Evrémonde. Money and power meant nothing to him, if they came from exploitation and oppression. Even though he had to inherit his uncle’s bequest, he left them to the poor and lived in London throught his own effort. When he realized that he must go back to Paris to help Gabelle, one of his servants, and make right the wrong his uncle had done, he acted without hesitation because he knew that was his duty. He even refused Carton’s help after he was judged to death. I thought, Charles Darnay was a shiny diamond in that cruel and violent society, and he was a hope, the hope of equality and peace.

Third, Mrs.Defarge. How crazy this woman was. Nobody could stop her steps toward revenge, except the death. Although it said that wherever there is oppression, there is resistance, I didn’t agree with Mrs.Defarge totally. Her resistance was inhumane, insensible and endless. For just as the aristocracy’s oppression had made an oppressor Mrs.Defarge herself, so will her oppression, in turn, make oppressors her victims. In the end of the novel, her death by a bullet from her own gun. It shown the author’s belief that inordinate retaliated lust would destroy one own self.

On the whole, A Tale of Two Cities is a successful novel. It shows us oppression and resistance, violence and terror, revolution and vengeance, love and friendship.

I am lucky enough to live in the 21st century, when peace and development are pursued all along. Nowadays, there also are many problems and dissensions among this world, but violence does not the best way problems are solved. Violence just creates more problems, something every sensible person knows. What we need are talks and communication. Before the revolution, the young doctor .Manette witnessed the guilty of the French marquis. So he was arrested in the Bastille by the marquis. After two years, his wife died. His daughter Lucie was send to London by his friends Lorry and adopted by the Miss Pross who is a maidservant. After 18 years, he was released from the Bastille and was taken care by his old servant Defarge. His daughter wanted to take his father to London. In the travel, she met the son of the marquis Charles Darnay who hated the guilty of his father and uncle. Then they loved each other. And now, Charles Dannay’s father had died, so manette wanted to forget the painful memory and hoped his daughter happy. So he agreed with them. In 1789, France break the revolution. All of the marquises was send to the guillotine. Because the Darnay was a marquis. So the Defarge read the report which was written by the doctor. Then Dannay was sentenced to death. Now Carton who always hidden loved Lucie went to the prison and he pretended Dannay. So Dannay escaped the prison. And carton was killed. However Madame Defarge still not gave up. She wanted to killed Dannay’s wife Lucie and their young child; finally she was burned by the pross.

After read this novel, let me know about the French revolution. I think the people who lived in that period were not lucky. The poor were very sad. They were too blindness. And I was moved the carton, he died for his love, and I like him very much.

“A Tale of Two Cities”, one of Dickens’ works, is a well-known long story. And it has a great influence on the society at that time. When I saw the title at first, I thought it might tell something about the developing process of two cities, which might be no fun. However, after reading it , I found I had been wrong.

It portrays a brutal, bloody and revengeful society as well as love and friendship. It happened before and after the Revolution in France. The ruthless and cruel landowners and noblemen exploited the miserable people who owned nothing, but these poor people worked for others day and night. Noblemen had the power that one word would doubtlessly send others to prison. As time passed by, the noise of the coming-up revolution storm in Paris was growing louder and louder. At last, it was on the fourteenth of July, 1789 that the revolution broke out.

“The Bastille and its officers were in the hands of people, and the people wanted revenge and blood.” The true Freedom of France came. “The Guillotine, the new machine of death, cut off the heads of many, many people—not only the powerful and the cruel, but also the beautiful, the innocent, and the good.” Among the good, there was a man called Darney. Even though his father, wife and friends knew he was innocent, the people thought he was the enemy and would go to the Guillotine.

In spite of a shadow of fear and hate here and there, we can also see the great and kind persons. I think the greatest person is Mr. Manette who had been a prisoner in the Bastille for eighteen years. What he suffered was difficult to imagine, but he was still kind and loved his daughter. He did his best to save his son-in-law, whose father and uncle were the men that had ever sent him to prison. Another great man is the lawyer, Sydney Carton, a friend of Darney. Before Darney went to Guillotine, Mr. Carton changed places with him and he said, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever know.” Besides, the story is full of love, including the love between father and daughter, the love between husband and wife, the love among friends and so on. In short, only if you have love in your heart, the life is meaningful. At the same time, the revenge will run away with you, freedom and happiness will be around you.

She is a kind-hearted lady made of love and sympathy; she is also the incarnation of elegance.

As a victim of the gloom society, he lives a miserable and contradictory life. They’re the leader of the revolution. Ernest Defarge, to some extent, is a good man. He was the servant of Dr.Manette, he provides accommodation for him. But his wife, Madame Defarge, is really a wicked woman. She knits all the time, she wants to kill all the people who lead a richer or happier life just out of envying and revenge. The result turns out to be dramatic: she’s killed by herself as a consequence that the gun goes off by accident.

The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.

The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingways literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers confidence in Hemingways capability as an author. Manolin?,a boy presumably in his adolescence, Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. Due to Santiago’s recent bad luck, Manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.

Joe DiMaggio, although DiMaggio never appears in the novel, he plays a significant role nonetheless. Santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Perico ?,Perico, the reader assumes, owns the bodega in Santiago’s village. He never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fisherman’s life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. This act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging Santiago.

Martin,like Perico, Martin, a café owner in Santiago’s village, does not appear in the story. The reader learns of him through Manolin, who often goes to Martin for Santiago’s supper. As the old man says, Martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid.

From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. It is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. Indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. Santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found “the great negro of Cienfuegos” worthy. HSantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. Rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny.

While it is certainly true that Santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.

Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. The the old man and the seais a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.

It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.

In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to ha一ve symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He beha一ved like a real man, a tough man.

It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudder···Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks. God seems to ha一ve no pity toward such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this poor old man time and time again. But the old San Diego never ga一ve in.

The old man’s story is not only a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also a symbol of the indestructible spirit of human. In reality, the old man was defeated, but in spirit, he was a winner. The spirit of tenacious fight of him suggested the dignity and perseverance of human people. Even a great successful person has some experience of frustration. There are various reasons of being failed, but even an insignificant failure is an unbearable strike. Going to sea, he would gain another hope of being successful. Maybe, the sinister life environment and the tenacity of life attitude is the reason that this composition is more and more attractive. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit, just like the old man’s saying“human is not born to be failure, one could be ruined, but he could not be defeated.” These words remind me of the “Destiny symphony", in which Beethoven says that “I could be destroyed, but I couldn’t be conquered”。 They indicate the meaning of a hero, the meaning of life. Also, it’s what this story wants to tell people: human should face the failure bra一vely. From this respect, this book is not an allegory or a fairy tale, but a realistic works. What’s important in this story is not win but the value of a life. The old man dares to challenge the extremity and over the limit time and time again. What he brought to human is not only an attitude of confidence, but also a powerful strength of spirit.

Failure is the bra一very to get up the courage to climb up when you fell down and to get the courage to climb up again when you fell again and never lose the hope of life and the dream of life. What is hero? I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It’s pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the he-ro-in-e,though I didn’t think she’s beautiful. But she’s smart. However, I didn’t pay much attention to the plot. I thought it’s so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven’t read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didn’t understand the story at that time. I didn’t know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn’t find where’ s the prejudice. I thought it’s normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I’m a prejudiced person so I can’t find where’s wrong.

I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

After I read the book that is called “The old man and the sea” I was deeply moved by the old man and his spirit.

The book written by Hemingway tells us a story that an old man whose name is Santiago went out to do some fishing on the sea on his own but down on his luck he hadn’t caught any fish for 84 days. Next day he caught a huge marlin which is bigger than his boat and took a formidable battle with it. He beat it at the end. When he was on the way home the smells of blood of the marlin draw a lot of sharks’ attention and they fought for it. In order to protect the marlin and him theold man tried his best to fight with them. After a cruel fight he won it and cameback home tiredly. Although he only got a skeleton of the giant marlin at last he is also a great hero in many people’s heart.

In the article the old man is a great man. Although he failed for many time in his lifehe never gave up. He is a steel-willing man who insisted his dream and work hard. You can destroy him but you can’t beat him. Whatever he faced to he would never yield to the difficult which shows a strong spirit.

In our lives I think we should learn something from the old man which will make us have a more valuable life. Whenever and wherever we meet trouble we should never give up and try our best to overcome it. We should always keep on our dream and make it come true. Every one has his backbone which can’t be bended by anyone which is very important for everyone in his whole life. If we meet difficulty in our life we should face it bravely and work out some way to solve theproblem whatever would happen at last. We can be destroyed but we can’t bebeat by anything or anyone. If you failed for many times in your life you wouldn’t surrender because if you try to do it you may succeed in your life but if you do not do it you would not be succeed forever. Everyone has his advantages and disadvantages in his life but we should face to our disadvantages and we must beconfident which would also make us be confident of our life. We should have faith in what we do in our life we will have a more beautiful life in the future and our dream will come true. We should pay more attention to what we do during our liferather than what we will get at the end because I think it is more important than any thing you get finally. If you enjoy you life not something you get you will have a meaningful life and a noble spirit. It will hurt you when you pay more attention to what you get in the future. It will also make you do something wrong which is bad for other people our society and our country.

I’m impressed by the sentence which is “We can be destroyed but we can’t bebeat.” I think everyone should do it no matter what happen in our life. This book makes me know something I didn’t know in the past. The book and the old man have a great influence in my life. I love this book.

the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation.It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world.Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers.

Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro.But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.I first read this book when I was in my fifteens.And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.My first impression of this story was from screen.It’s long long ago, maybe before I can read english books.I don’t remember which movie edition I had seen.But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume.
