Why didnt Hemingway let the old man win in the end? In the words of the old man in the novel, "a man is not born to be defeated", "a man can be destroyed, but he cant be defeated." This is the philosophy of the old man and the sea. Theres no denying that as long as its human, its flawed. When a person admits this defect and tries to overcome it instead of succumbing to it, whether he can finally overcome his own defect, he is a winner, because he has overcome his own compromise on the defect, he is the winner of his own courage and confidence. The old fisherman is the winner who dares to challenge his own defects and courage and confidence. From the perspective of worldly view of victory, the old fisherman is not the final winner, because although he defeated the great Marlin at first, the great Marlin was finally eaten by the sharks. He just returned to the shore with the white bone shelf of the great marlin, that is to say, the sharks are the winners. However, in the eyes of idealists, the old fisherman is the winner, because he has never been to the sea, not to the great marlin, not to the shark compromise and surrender. Reading the book "the old man and the sea", I was deeply moved by the spirit of the old fisherman in the book! He let me know that a person must have perseverance to succeed!
This book describes an old fisherman who has a spirit of not saying defeat. Although he didnt catch a fish in 84 days, he still had hope and confidence every day. He believed that he could catch fish. So he made a long voyage. I admire this old fisherman very much. Think about myself. Sometimes when I do something and encounter a little setback, I want to give up. But with the encouragement of my parents, I persisted.
During the long voyage, he met a huge marlin. After three days of hard fighting, though his hand was cramped again and again, he grabbed the fishing rod as hard as he could; though his hand was marked with blood marks by the fishing line, he continued to insist and finally caught the fish. When I read this, I thought of that climbing. When I was halfway up the mountain, I was too tired. I fell twice on the road, and my hand was cut by the thorns on the side of the road. I wanted to give up for a time and didnt want to climb any more. But my mother encouraged me to say, "the goal is right in front of my eyes, and I will be at the top of the mountain. If I give up now, it will be a failure!" So I braced up and finally reached the top of the mountain!
The old man tied the fish to one side of the boat, but in the process of returning, the sharks in the sea found the marlin with the smell of blood. Many sharks attacked again and again. The old man fought with the sharks for wisdom and courage again and again. Finally, the old man stood out and brought the big fish back to the fishing port. Compared with the old fisherman, my little difficulty is nothing. As long as I stick to it and never say die, I will succeed!
I know that in my later life and study, I will also encounter many difficulties, but as long as I bravely meet the challenges with a confidence, I will always be a real winner!

The old fisherman drifted in the sea without any harvest for 84 days, and finally caught a huge marlin. After two days and two nights of struggle, the old man finally killed the big guy. But on the way back, the big fish unfortunately attracted sharks. So after another deadly fight, the old man came back to the shore exhausted, but the giant marlin was only a skeleton bitten by the shark.
Although Hemingway didnt give the story a perfect ending, he depicted the unyielding quality of the spiritual strong for the readers.
"A man is not born to be defeated. He can be destroyed, but he cannot be defeated.". This is the old mans belief and the thought expressed in the old man and the sea. When one strives for a goal on the road of life, he often encounters many setbacks, just like the old man struggling with the shark in order to bring back the marlin. Many people are often afraid of suffering and succumb to it, and make themselves submit to it. But the old man didnt, and kept on fighting. Although the old man failed in the end - the marlin was eaten up by sharks, the old man was a "unbeaten loser". He never succumbed in spirit or action. Failure is not terrible. Who hasnt failed in life? Someone will give in to fate in failure, and the old will grow up in failure. The old mans image of "he can be eliminated, but he cant be defeated" is fully reflected in him, and people cant help but have deep admiration for the old man.
Return to reality from the old man. In reality, we are often the same as the old man. When we encounter such a setback, sometimes it is also a wave of ups and downs. However, "now is not the time to think about what is missing. Think about what you can do with what you have.". The difference between the weak and the strong is fully reflected in it. The Old Man And The Sea This is a great book， mind you。 How I gave opinions to that is the spirits of Santiago greatly affected me。 But the author， Earnest Hemingway said if his writing is really good， then the characters can also be many other things。 Santiago is a common fisherman， and he hadnt had a fish for 84 days。 And this time when he left he fished a big salmon by himself。 He fought the fish for 3 days and nights and finally he kills it。 He called it his brother。 But he then had to fight the sharks and finally he gone home with a fish spine， and some fish bones。 I could find his great spirits of never giving up。 Particularly if he just loose the grip of the fishing poleand let the fish go， he wouldnt have any trouble， but he can stay to the end。 Something I regret to tell you is that I didnt read this book very carefully， so I intend to tell you I want to read this book again and tell you what Ive gained through the second—time reading。

The the old man and the seais a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.
It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.
In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to ha一ve symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He beha一ved like a real man, a tough man.
It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudder···Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks. God seems to ha一ve no pity toward such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this poor old man time and time again. But the old San Diego never ga一ve in.
The old man’s story is not only a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also a symbol of the indestructible spirit of human. In reality, the old man was defeated, but in spirit, he was a winner. The spirit of tenacious fight of him suggested the dignity and perseverance of human people. Even a great successful person has some experience of frustration. There are various reasons of being failed, but even an insignificant failure is an unbearable strike. Going to sea, he would gain another hope of being successful. Maybe, the sinister life environment and the tenacity of life attitude is the reason that this composition is more and more attractive. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit, just like the old man’s saying“human is not born to be failure, one could be ruined, but he could not be defeated.” These words remind me of the “Destiny symphony", in which Beethoven says that “I could be destroyed, but I couldn’t be conquered”。 They indicate the meaning of a hero, the meaning of life. Also, it’s what this story wants to tell people: human should face the failure bra一vely. From this respect, this book is not an allegory or a fairy tale, but a realistic works. What’s important in this story is not win but the value of a life. The old man dares to challenge the extremity and over the limit time and time again. What he brought to human is not only an attitude of confidence, but also a powerful strength of spirit.

Failure is the bra一very to get up the courage to climb up when you fell down and to get the courage to climb up again when you fell again and never lose the hope of life and the dream of life. What is hero? I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It’s pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the he-ro-in-e,though I didn’t think she’s beautiful. But she’s smart. However, I didn’t pay much attention to the plot. I thought it’s so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven’t read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didn’t understand the story at that time. I didn’t know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn’t find where’ s the prejudice. I thought it’s normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I’m a prejudiced person so I can’t find where’s wrong.
I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation.()It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.
I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.
Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.
My first impression of this story was from screen.
It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume.
