拉宾德拉纳特·泰戈尔（1861年—1941年），印度诗人、文学家、社会活动家、哲学家和印度民族主义者。

写作背景：1908年到1919年间，印度民族解放运动陷入低潮。
泰戈尔因与领导民族自治运动的国大党领袖们发生意见分歧，主要反映在农村问题、宗教教源问题以及斗争方式等问题上，因而退出运动，于1907年回到家乡圣地尼克坦从事民族教育和文艺创作。
这时期他出版了一系列诗歌、小说、剧本、歌曲、书信和杂文等著作。
其中，他的哲理诗，可以说代表着诗人在这一阶段的思想特色：即通过宗教、哲学、伦理道德等途径来实现社会改造这一任务，而爱则是人类的社会理想。
《新月集》就是宣传人类爱的产物。
