整个神探夏洛克的剧在现在的二十一世纪的背景下，关于全人类的意义就是我们如何生存。
没有人能逃得过死亡，就算逃去天涯海角，从我们一出生开始我们便也同时走向死亡。
夏洛克改写了这个故事，想用苏门答腊来逃过死亡，或者说他想逃过的是这种我们一出生便摆脱不掉的走向死亡却又逃避死亡的生存困境。
人类总是试图逃避命运，从俄底浦斯对于弑父娶母的逃避到夏洛克的苏门答腊，但是显而易见，命运不是用来逃避或改变的，因为对于死亡，说实在话，我们无能为力，那面对这样的生存困境我们又该何去何从
这部剧中有一句台词，在第二集中我就记住了，果然在最后一集中又再次出现——Ii is what it is 这，就是夏洛克给我们的最后的答案，命运就是它原本的样子，而我们也以我们原本的样子去对待就好。
夏洛克在小时由于红胡子产生了童年阴影，在随后的生命中一直逃避着人情，但最后拯救了妹妹也拯救了夏洛克的正是这份天然的人之常情。
而这也是华生对于夏洛克如此重要的原因，他是一个契机，让夏洛克慢慢走进人情中，无论是他俩一起工作的刺激，还是夏洛克假死后华生的悲伤和愤怒，这都是夏洛克慢慢成为他原本的自己的一个个痕迹。
