The Count of Monte Cristo[ðə] [kaunt] [ɔv, əv, v, f] [ˌmɔnti]

There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel, that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living.

never forget that until the day when God shall deign to reveal the future to man,all human wisdom is summed up in these two words, −− Wait and hope.

那个so it is said,我也不知道要把它放在哪里比较好。

linguistic languages evolves. the slang people used to use a lot in my times in shanghai are barely used today. literature is relative to the times, the authors and the readers typically are the contemporaries and somewhat peers. we all appreciate shakespear but we do not really give a shit about it as people used to. we cannot stand watch nothing but that, but only welcome it once in a while. why? because it is not in our times now let's talk about chinese literature. i for one believe it is a very rich trasure and we should all dig deep into it it is for me the greatest cultural inheritage of the human kind and i personally think it is a shame we lost most of it today but we are not to completely reverse back into the old times in formalist. it is almost funny when we express ourselves in our contemporary feelings in the old languages and forms! the real thing is how to dig the real spririt out of our cultural inheritage, not the form itself. if chen dan qing really failed to understand this, i am not sure i want to see his works in oil any more. perhaps why he is dry now. how to free oneself from form but arise from the real solid foundation with the real core spirit...that's the real thing for stupid guys like myself. those great and smart people of fame, may god bless them.

Wordsworth Classics covers a huge list of beloved works of literature in English and translations。

This growing series is rigorously updated, with scholarly introductions and notes added to new titles。

The story of Edmund Dantes,self-styled Count of Monte Cristo。

The novel presents a powerful conflict between good and evil, embodied in an epic saga that is complicated by the hero’s discomfort with the implications of his own actions。

Synopsis: The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the great literary adventures, indeed William Thackeray was so enthralled he began reading `at six one morning and never stopped till eleven at night’。

The hero is Edmond Dantes, a young sailor who, falsely accused of treason, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Chateau d’If。

After staging a dramatic escape he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies。

A novel of enormous tension and excitement, Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge, with Dantés, believing himself to be an `Angel of Providence’,pursuing his vengeance to the bitter end before realizing that he himself is a victim of fate。

This new edition uses the classic, anonymous translation that has been in print since the nineteenth century。
