什刹海位于
刹海位于北京市城区的西北部，由前海、后海和西海三个相连的湖泊组成。
这里曾是南北大运河北段的起点，水域宽阔，景色优美。
大运河上的船只，可以经过通惠河直达这里。
这里是漕运码头，朝廷运粮的船队和商船帆樯林立，非常繁忙，岸边茶楼酒肆鳞次栉比，生意兴隆。
俗话说“先有什刹海，后有北京城”，什刹海风景区保留了老北京的民俗文化和典型的建筑。
这里有大量的胡同、四合院，居住这北京本地的10000多户居民，形成了老北京淳朴的邻里生活环境。
什刹海还吸引了众多的官宦、名家来此修建府第，如保存最好的恭亲王府、醇亲王府等, 梅兰芳故居、郭沫若纪念馆也都什刹海旁边。
如今，能看到老北京旧时民风的地方越来越少了，但在什刹海，依然能看到老北京的胡同与四合院，依然能够听到秋日里清脆的虫鸣。
不知是2003年的“非典”，让人们的更崇尚自然，还有是大量游客的到来，这里又自发形成了一条酒吧街，给古老的什刹海又增添了几多现代风情，这里不仅是老北京人休闲纳凉的好地方，还成为中外游客体验老北京风情和年轻人聚会游玩的好去处。
