A PIGEON, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water painted on a signboard. The Raven and the Swan乌鸦和天鹅 A RAVEN saw a Swan and desired to secure for himself the same beautiful plumage. Supposing that the Swan's splendid white color arose from his washing in the water in which he swam, the Raven left the altars in the neighborhood where he picked up his living, and took up residence in the lakes and pools. But cleansing his feathers as often as he would, he could not change their color, while through want of food he perished. Change of habit cannot alter Nature.

The Miser守财奴 A MISER sold all that he had and bought a lump of gold, which he buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at daily. One of his workmen observed his frequent visits to the spot and decided to watch his movements. He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, Pray do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it.

The Wolf and the Lamb WOLF, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold, resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the Lamb the Wolf's right to eat him. He thus addressed him:Sirrah, last year you grossly insulted me. Indeed, bleated the Lamb in a mournful tone of voice, I was not then born. Then said the Wolf , You feed in my pasture. No, good sir, replied the Lamb, I have not yet tasted grass. Again said the Wolf, You drink of my well. No, exclaimed the Lamb, I never yet drank water, for as yet my mother's milk is both food and drink to me. Upon which the Wolf seized him and ate him up, saying, Well! I won't remain supperless, even though you refute every one of my imputations. The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.

The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came and gnawed the rope with his teeth and set him free, exclaiming: You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor; now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to con benefits on a Lion.

回答者: sanxianshutiao | 一级 | 2008-11-27 20:17 Once before the Iranian revolution, the then President of the United States Jimmy Carter visited Iran. He held a formal talk with the Shah, Pahlevi. As the Shah had an excellent command of English, no interpreters were needed for the occasion. However, the Shah spoke English with an accent which led to a misunderstanding on a major question, But interestingly enough, Carter, being a southerner, also had his accent and so the misundeerstanding turned into a double one. This is how it all happened. During their talk Carter mentioned a certain African organization and asked the Shah to give an overall appraisal of it. The Shah didn't have a very high opinion of the said organization as he found it beset with many internal problems, so he used the word impotent to describe it. The trouble was in pronouncing the word he put the stress on the second syllable and the word sounded like important to Carter. As it happened Carter himself thought the organization was a very important one and he felt most pleased that their opinions should coincide, Yes, I agree that the organization is indeed very important, he repeated to the Shah. Now in his southern accent, the word important souded very much like the word impotent, and the Shah too felt most pleased that the President should agree with him. Now of all the people present on the occasion, only the then US ambassador to Iran, Mr. Sullivan, realised that it was a double misunderstanding as he knew the President's and the Shah's different opinions on that African organization and he was also familiar with both men's peculiar accents. Naturally he didn't see it fit for him to put them wise on the matter so he kept his mouth shut. He cast a glance around the room to see if anyone else was enjoying the room to see if anyone else was enjoying the joke with him and so the matter was allowed to pass.

Once there was a poem, it was said: There’s a lot of joy in living, If we face life with a smile; Take time to do some kindness, And go the second mile. For the greatest joy is giving, And it all comes back to you When you add a little sunshine To all you say and you do. Before the day is ended Try to do something worthwhile, Help to ease another’s burden And make a sad heart sing. You will find each new tomorrow Will be happy from the start If you only will remember, Keep a smile within your heart! For years scientists have asked themselves a question “Why do we smile?” No other animals smile—only human beings, so does smile help us to survive in any way? The answer seems to be that smiling helps us to relax, reducing tension and preventing illnesses which are caused by stress. On the whole, smiling is really good to us. But some people may still think: if you’re unhappy, it can’t do you any good to smile, can it? Actually, it is not true. Apparently the opposite effects of smiling are just the same whether you feel like smiling or not. Scientists in Californian asked a group of actors to act five different feelings; happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear—just using their faces. During they were acting, the change in their heart rate, blood pressure and temperature were written down. Most of the feelings they acted didn’t cause any changes, but when the actors smiled, their heart rate and their blood pressure went down. This happened even though they were only acting! So even if we really feel sad inside, smiling also seems to make us feel better. Besides those, smiling also helps to keep things in perspective. Being interfered by friends or a flat tyre won’t seem quite so bad if you can see the funny side. So if you find yourself in a stressful situation, try to imagine how it must seem to an outsider and let yourself giggle. As a psychologist once wrote: “If people try to show a positive reaction instead of a negative one, this will eventually become part of their personality. If you start to smile, in time you will actually become happier.” So, forget about the unhappy things, face life with a smile, it will make our life more colorful! Once there was a poem, it was said: There’s a lot of joy in living, If we face life with a smile; Take time to do some kindness, And go the second mile. The story is about an 11-year-old girl Akeelah Anderson. Her father died when she was five years old. During her childhood, she lived a poor life with her mother So she can’t afford going to school. Fortunately, she was born to be a good word speller ——she could remember a word instantly. One day, someone told her that she could sign up the “spelling bee”, while her mother didn’t allow her to take part in the competition. A teacher named Larabee want to help her with spelling. At last, after a hard training process and learnt appropriate training methods, she won the championship. I like Akeelah, for she is a sunny girl. She has an optimistic attitude towards life——she went through a lot of difficulties, but she became more confident. Each time she failed , she always said: “It was not a big deal”. I think we should learn from Akeelah. She never complains and she overcame difficulties with her optimistic mind. Nowadays, many people complain that life is bad. For example, if my parents don’t buy my favorite things for me, I will hate them. But to Akeelah, She doesn’t have a father and she only can talk with his photo! In this world, some children are orphans. Now think about, I meet the pain, what! So, I think I should be good to parents, and cherish the time being with them. Many great people also have a lot of difficulties on their road of life. Such as Martin Luther King. He met Kennedy and called for the adoption of new civil rights law- the right to equality for blacks. Martin’s life is like Akeelah’s, they both don’t mind others' strange vision, proceed without hesitation to the dream, and so they can be successful. If you want to be a great person, you need to work hard. Remember the saying: The genius is a special passion! It's not stupid, and you will get a lot. Success has many ways, but the best way is to catch any opportunity to study like a short break between classes when you can read a book or only an article; when you wait a bus on bus station, you can write a poem, when you on the way to school, you can spell some words, at least two, using the money to buy some useful books.it’s better than buying food and toy.....don’t waste time, money and energy to do useless things! And in this story, Larabee sponsored Akeelah a lot. He made her realize their dreams, and let her have a better future. He is not only a good teacher but also making Akeelah feel the warmth from her father. At the same time he made Akeelah happy, too. At last,I think everyone need to be confident, just like Akeelah says: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. You are the child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Let’s be a good and a confident person and try to face life with smile!
