她的代表作《窗边的小豆豆》1981年出版后，不仅在日本，而且在全球都引起了极大的反响，截至2001年，日文版累计销量达938万册，成为日本历史上销量最大的一本书。
该书已被译成了33种文字，介绍到世界各地，英文版在美国出版时，《纽约时报》发表了两个整版的书评文章，这一“殊荣”，不仅在她之前没有人获得过，在此之后也再无第二人。
该书的英文版仅日本国内销量就达70多万册，至今无人超越。
1984年，联合国的官员在读完英文版的《窗边的小豆豆》后，认为“这个人这么了解孩子的心理，再也没有比她更合适的人选了”，因而任命她为联合国儿童基金会继著名国际影星奥黛莉 赫本之后第7位、亚洲历史上第一位亲善大使。

就是他，在小豆豆到巴学园的第一天听小豆豆说了4个钟头的话；也是他，每当看到小豆豆，就会说：“你真是一个好孩子
”他一手创办的巴学园只有50个学生，学生们在电车里上课，每天上课让孩子们从自己最喜欢的那门课开始；下午可以去散步，而散步时老师会顺便教一些自然、历史和生物的知识；有游泳池，校长鼓励孩子们光着身子游泳，因为，“如果男孩和女孩觉得对方的身体和自己的身体不一样，是很奇怪的事情，那就不好了”，而且，“无论什么样的身体，都是美丽的”———这样，即便是身体有障碍的孩子也不会自卑了。
这些道理，说起来学教育的人都知道，但要真的实施，就不那么容易了。
所以说，小林校长真的让人敬佩，而小豆豆的巴学园，也是让人羡慕的。
这也许就是《窗边的小豆豆》自1981年出版以来就成为日本历史上销量最大的畅销书的原因之一吧。
