Lessons on water useLast Friday,a group of students are Sun Yat-sen Univesity in Guangdong Province began a campus water-saving programme.Part of their effort involved putting up pothos on bulletin boards around the school,showing water problems in some drought hit parts of the province.They also got students to take part in a clothes-washing contest to see who could get their clothes clean with the least amount of water.The idea actually came from a junior middle and primary school activity.Some pupils from Qingxin Country had gathered to speak about the water problem.And about 100 students from Sun Yat-sen Univesity attend the lecture to learn about the serious water shortage conditions in the childern's hometown.There's been no rain for several months.Sometimes we go hungry since there's no water for cooking,said Luo Yongxing,a junior.Of coursr,the water shortage problem isn't limited just to Guangdong.It's nationwide.According to Ministry of Water Reasource statistics,China is in bad need of water-water availability per person in the country is 2,200 cubic metres,or about enough for a shower for 5,500 people.This isa quarter of the world average.And the problem is serious in China's cities,with more than 40cities out of 660 facing water shortage.Water resources are crutial for a country's development.It's very important for students understang this.Some school have aleady taken steps to increase student awareness.One example was at Beijing Normal University:it introduced a water card to measure student use in September last year.Students used to have to pay only 1yuan for an unlimited spent in the shower.The cost was 0.1 yuan per minutes.But the card tied the cost of the shower to the amount of time spent in the shower.The cost was 0.1 yuan per minute.So,the more leisurely the shower,the more the students had to pay.The new card proved to be an effective way to save water.The shool said that 16,000 tons of water was saved in a three-month period.Other schools that have taken similar steps.Students say this is a good way to teach them how to save water.As citizens,students are responsible for saving water to help with the shortage problem in the country.In my opinion,the most important thing is to help us understand that it's our duty to save water.Only pay attention to bathrooms is far from enough .We should do the same in dining halls as well as dormitories.
