湖南省望城县人。
1940年出身于穷苦农民家庭。
7岁沦为孤儿。

他热爱集体，关心战友，关心群众，把“毫不利己、专门利人”看成是人生最大的幸福和快乐，并身体力行，认真实践，“把有限的生命投入到无限的为人民服务之中去”。
他把自己省吃俭用积存起来的钱，寄给受灾人民，送给家庭困难的战友。
他曾担任校外辅导员，以自己的模范行动影响和激励少年一代健康成长。
他谦虚谨慎，从不自满自炫，受到赞誉不骄傲，做了好事不留姓名。
1962年8月15日，执行运输任务时不幸殉职。
他在部队生活2年8个月，荣立二等功1次，三等功2次，受嘉奖多次，被评为“模范共青团员”“节约标兵”，被选为抚顺市人民代表大会代表。
雷锋的模范事迹和高尚思想在军内外产生巨大影响。
国防部命名他生前所在班为“雷锋班”。
1963年3月5日发出“向雷锋同志学习”的伟大号召。
1990年3月5日，江泽民等党和国家领导人分别题词，号召全国人民进一步向雷锋学习，弘扬雷锋精神，为建设具有中国特色的社会主义而努力。

雷锋生平1940年12月18日 出生在湖南省望城县简家塘一个贫苦农民家庭1950年9月至1956年7月 在望城县龙回乡，清水塘，荷叶坝小学读书1958年11月至1959年12月 在鞍钢化工总厂当推土机手1960年1月至1962年8月 在中国人民解放军某部运输连任战士、班长。
1962年8月15日 在辽宁抚顺市望花区不幸以身殉职，年仅22岁雷锋同志，是中国人民解放军沈阳部队工程兵某部运输连四班班长。
一九四0年十二月十八日，他出生在湖南省望城县的一个贫苦农民家庭里。
他的一家被万恶的旧社会弄得家破人亡，在短短的四年多的时间里，他的爷爷、爸爸、妈妈、哥哥、弟弟五位亲人被逼迫相继死去，小雷锋不满七岁就成了孤儿。
一九四九年，雷锋的家乡解放了。
雷锋这个孤儿才苦尽甜来翻了身，得到了党和人民政府的亲切关怀。
雷锋深知：是共产党，毛主席给了他幸福的生活，送他上学，培养他成长。

在学校里，雷锋一直是大家称赞的好学生。
一九五六年，雷锋高小毕业，先后在乡政府当通信员，在县委当公务员，在团山湖农场开拖拉机。
一九五七年，他加入共青团。
在参加根治沩水河的工程中，被评为工地模范。
一九五八年，他来到鞍钢参加工业建设，当一名推土机手，又多次被评为先进生产者、红旗手和标兵。
一九六零年，雷锋参加解放军。
参军后荣立二等功一次，三等功两次，团营嘉奖多次，被评为节约标兵，沈阳部队工程兵领导机关授予他模范共青团员称号。
一九六零年十一月，雷锋光荣地加入了中国共产党。
一九六一年六月，当选为抚顺市人民代表。
一九六二年八月十五日，雷锋同志在辽宁省抚顺市不幸因公殉职，年仅二十二岁。
1963年1月7日国防部命名他生前所在的班为“雷锋班”。
同年3月5日亲笔题词“向雷锋同志学习”。
周恩来题词“向雷锋同志学习：憎爱分明的阶级立场，言行一致的革命精神，公而忘私的共产主义风格，奋不顾身的无产阶级斗志”。
朱德题词“学习雷锋，做毛主席的好战士”。
雷锋的一生，是把有限的生命投入到无限的为人民服务之中的一生。
